Illinois State Police (Recruitment)

Intern

May - July 2023 • Collinsville, IL

What I liked

M/Tpr O. Williams said at orientation that the internship was unpaid but you compensate in experience. Let me tell you the Illinois State Police Internship was beyond an experience it was astonishing and raw. I did mine in Troop 8 Patrol/Zone 6 Investgations and got to experience patrol, crime scene, investigations, street crimes, violent crimes. ISP has it all, literally. Aviation, Drug/Narcotic Enfrocement, Patrol, SWAT, Fatal 4 (Speed, DUI, Traffic), Street Crimes, Violent Crimes, Investigations, Counter-Terrorism, Task Force Officer (Local and Federal [FBI, DEA, ATF, etc.]), Crime Scene, Firearms, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Forensics, Recruitment, and there are more units! The best part was being a counselor at the Team Illinois Youth Police Camp. A week being with at-risk youth and willing-to-participate youth was an amazing experience every day. Making relationships with law enforcemt officers, youth, amd other individuals, showing positive characteristics, and seeing how much troopers, ISP personnel, local LEO, local EMS, amd other leaders in the communities caring about the youth and wanting to make a difference and show them that there is always something to look forward too was the best thing ever!

What I wish was different

Nothing! In my eyes, this was perfect.

Advice

Take it all in! Listen, observe, ask, and take part. If you are looking to do this for convenience and credit hours or school requirements... do not waste the Illinois State Troopers or Administrators time and do not waste yours either. This is not just an internship, it is an experience.
