Camp Counselor

May 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I loved working at camp! My coworkers were incredible and I learned that I can handle myself in high stress environments! The best part of camp was all of the campers I met and was able to form connections with.

What I wish was different

I do wish that there was more ability to take breaks, being a camp counselor is a full time, 24/7 position but I would have enjoyed small breaks throughout the week.

Advice

Being flexible and being able to adapt moment to moment, week by week, is very important!

Camp Counselor

May 2018 • Allendale, MI

What I liked

Working as an overnight camp counselor for Indian Trails Camp was truly one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Everyday was different, yet everyday I was thankful to be working for such a great organization. I enjoyed being able to work with my co-counselors from all different walks of life while also meeting a lot of great campers. It was such a great experience working with individuals with varying disabilities and getting a small glimpse into their lives and how even the smallest task sometimes ended up being difficult. It also gave me a new appreciation for the parents and guardians of the campers, since they aid their children / individual all year round. I truly believe this was the best summer than I have ever had.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a little more time off on the weekends, since we stayed at camp on site from Sunday - Friday at about 7 pm. Other than that, everything else was awesome.

Advice

It may seem overwhelming at first, especially during training, but don't give up. I guarantee you this - if you enjoy helping others and making people smile and laugh, this is the perfect job. It's not always easy. In fact sometimes, you'll want to give up. However, seeing the difference you make in not only the campers lives, but also the counselors will make it all worth it..
