Interaction Design Intern

May - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

IDEO has an absolutely superb company culture and I had the chance to meet a lot of really inspiring, talented, and influential people. I also got a lot of design mentorship and professional experience working on multiple projects with different teams.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed longer. Three months is not long enough at a place like IDEO, but due to the course scheduling at CCA, taking a semester off school to stay at IDEO was not an option without pushing me back an entire year in school.

Advice

A lot of people want to work at IDEO because of the name and reputation it has (especially within my school), but it's not the right place for everyone. You have to be a certain kind of person to enjoy and succeed in working at a place like IDEO, which is why they are very selective in their hiring process. Because of this, they don't hire anyone unless they think it will be an absolute 100% good fit. Luckily I was this kind of person and I absolutely loved IDEO because of it, but for other people I know they definitely would not have enjoyed it as much. So for anyone who applies to IDEO and doesn't get in, it doesn't mean you're not a good designer, it just means that you probably wouldn't fit in with the culture at IDEO and it wouldn't be the best experience for you. You can think of it as a sort of blessing in disguise...
