Hyrax Films

Intern

September 2023 - March 2024 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

Working at Hyrax was a great opportunity and a really enjoyable experience. The team is small and super friendly, and the office environment is laid back. I was always excited to go to work. I learned a lot of valuable skills in post-production and got my first real insight into the nitty gritty of professional filmmaking. I felt very supported and valued by the team and felt the work I was doing provided tangible benefits to the films being made. This certainly is not a "get me coffee" kind of internship; I walked away with a lot of knowledge I didn't have before and a lot more excitement about going into filmmaking.

What I wish was different

For it being an unpaid internship, they do want a fair amount of hours from their interns. However, I found that once I was hired the team was very flexible with my schedule and worked around my classes. I generally worked about nine hours per week which was very reasonable.

Advice

Be prepared to be put out on your own a little bit at times. They will sometimes ask you to make films independently or assign you a task that you're super new to, and there might not be much instruction. It can be a little daunting at first, but the team is always willing to answer questions even if they are a little dumb.

Research Intern

January 2020 - March 2021 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Hyrax is an amazing internship opportunity! The team is tight-knit, friendly, fun, and talented. I learned a wide-range of skills in documentary film including videography, research, story telling, and editing. These skills and the connections I made working for Hyrax have allowed me to be hired as a producer for other production companies. When offered the opportunity to return to Hyrax as a producer I jumped on the chance, I would work with them over and over again.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Take full advantage of the small size of the company, make connections with everyone and learn as much as you can from the entire team. Jump on any opportunity offered to you, offer assistance with any task you can.

Junior Assistant Editor

What I liked

Hyrax Films has been a very open and friendly environment. All of the members of the crew that I have worked with, either remotely or in-person have been nothing but kind, approachable, and respectful since I began as an intern at the company. I have learned a lot about both the technical and practical sides that goes into making documentary films and series and it always feels like I'm both growing in my personal goals as a filmmaker while also contributing towards large scale projects in ways that feel meaningful. It's been a really fufilling experience working at Hyrax Films.

What I liked

I have only positive things to say about this internship. I came in with minimal experience and only passion about furthering my knowledge about documentary filmmaking. They were nothing but welcoming and flexible. The team there guided me and made me feel comfortable right away. They were curious about my opinions on the work and made sure to tell me they were appreciative of what I had to say. I am excited to continue working along side the team and continue to strengthen my skill set and relationships with everybody there.

Documentary Production Assistant

January - September 2022 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

This internship has been very helpful in guiding me through work that can sometimes feel aimless or ambiguous, and through this work I have learned many skills within my discipline as well as in film production, and research work that I further developed during my time as intern. I appreciate how my thoughts and ideas are inquired for and respected; the office is cozy and amenable, and work is assigned based on personal skills and interests. The team makes sure the work you are doing is valuable to you, and provides ample training for various software and methods used throughout the production process. Overall the experience is great and highly recommended
