Hypotenuse Consulting

Customer Experience Marketing Intern

October 2021 - April 2022 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Overall I had a great time in this role, and appreciate the professional knowledge I was able to gain in an upbeat supportive environment. One thing I appreciated was the ability to ask questions and have an open dialogue with Greg as I learned. He knew that I was ready to learn, and created an environment that both challenged me and supported me. While I had to take ownership of my work, there was always room to ask questions, and gain feedback. I also loved the opportunity to delve deep into understanding customer needs and satisfaction levels. Conducting research in these specific industries provided insights into how companies in the airline and insurance sectors strive to enhance their customer service. As a faux customer, I was able to see into the eyes of the average person within each step and was able to identify bottlenecks and points of improvement.

What I wish was different

My research gathered a lot of information on our clients, but also the competition within the industry. While this information was helpful to our client, it could have been used in other applications like gaining new clients. Greg has since changed this!

Advice

As an intern, try to gain as much insight into these industries and services as you can. Going into this role, I did not have any prior knowledge of the insurance or airline industry. However, as I started to research I found it helpful to see who were the "beacons" of each industry. I reflected on personal experiences within these industries and often asked Greg about the key characteristics of how these customers function. Greg has extensive knowledge of customer experience strategies and is a great person to go to for knowledge on your role and networking. While this is a professional environment, I felt comfortable having an open dialogue with Greg on if I was stuck or confused.
