Huntington Ingalls Industries, Technical Solutions

Software Engineer Intern

May 2021 • Suffolk, VA

What I liked

I liked everything about it. The team I was put on was nice and I got to work on real issues instead of having an internship project given to me.

What I wish was different

There were times where I wished I had more interaction with people on the team because a lot of the time I was working solo.

Advice

It was a good experience and I learned a lot. However, you end up having to learn a lot of things on your own by googling solutions.

Electrical Engineering Intern

July - August 2020 • Rome, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the work and the engineers that were there. It was a very friendly environment and I felt very welcomed.

What I wish was different

I wish they had offered a living stipend, and that I was able to work on more that one project but that's just how the timing worked.

Advice

There were times where I tried to work on my own and that ended up being a big waste of time because I didn't get very far. So my advise would be if you're confused don't be afraid to ask questions.

System Administrator Intern

May - August 2019 • Norfolk, VA

What I liked

The environment was very friendly towards interns. The full-time system administrators were very welcoming for answering any questions that I had. They allowed me to shadow them whenever they went to complete a ticket or solve a problem. They also assisted me in getting two IT certifications.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have access to more of the systems and areas within the facility. However, I understand that since it was in a very secure facility that giving me this access would have been a liability for the company. It did hinder some of the work that I wanted to do, but it still encouraged me to learn from a system administrator that had access.

Advice

Don't hesitate to learn as much as possible when you are an intern. The people around you in the company are there to help and have a lot more experience. As long as you show interest you can learn a lot which will help you if you want a similar job in the future. Don't be afraid to make mistakes because it is from these mistakes that you will learn.

CE Intern

May 2018 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

Freedom. The opportunity to make mistakes. I was not micro managed. Flexible work schedule. An increase in responsibility as I showed my competence.

What I wish was different

Occasionally work is slow. Sometimes interns need to wait for something useful to come up that they can work on.

Advice

Everything your employer asks you to do is going to be used in some shape or form. They wouldn't ask you just to do busy work. They want you to do things correctly and not necessarily quickly. Correctness outweighs how much time it takes you to complete a task.
