Human Rights Education Institute

Program Intern

June - August 2018 • Coeur d'Alene, ID

What I liked

I loved working with kids and teaching them about topics like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, designing games, presentations, and activities surrounding issues like refugee relations and advocacy, and doing research on different topics to create a holistic curriculum surrounding Human Rights and Multiculturalism for multiple day camps.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more one-on-one mentoring and feedback from my supervisor so that I could have better understood my strengths and weaknesses as an intern.

Advice

I would say that it is important to know your boundaries; have an understanding of what you want to get out of the experience, what skills you want to gain or things you want to learn. When you are asked to do things, during an unpaid internship, that have no learning value or are outside your set boundaries--don't be afraid to push back and assert your value as an intern.
