What I liked

I participated in a remote internship this past summer due to Covid, but I still think that I had a really great experience and was still able learn a lot. I really liked how open and willing everyone was to talk to me and to share their experience or any piece of advice that they may have. Although, it had to be through Zoom, I felt that I was really able to connect with many people on the floor. No matter what their position was, or how high up they were, they were still willing to find time to talk. I also felt that I was able to connect with more individuals across the bank because it was remote. I was able to talk with individuals who were located in different offices and even different countries such as, Mexico and Hong Kong.

What I wish was different

Because it was remote, we were not assigned to work on specific desks so we did not get the experience of what it is like to be an analyst and what their typical day to day tasks are like. We did more shadowing and overview-type work, which was definitely very interesting and beneficial, but I think it would have been better to get that hands on, "desk work" experience.

Advice

In order to make the most of any internship experience, I think the most important thing is to reach out and to connect with as many people as possible. Everyone wants to see that you are engaged and eager to learn. So, reaching out to as many people as possible to learn the most about the company and the industry, will really benefit your experience. I think this also sets you apart from other interns as it shows that you take initiative and want to be there to learn. No matter how high up someone is, they will always be willing to find time to talk for at least 20-30 minutes, and it is definitely worth it. But when you schedule each meetings, it is crucial to come prepared with at least 3 questions so that they know that you did the work and research ahead of time as well.
