I loved the opportunity to try out a new career path via hands on learning. Working at the Houston Zoo provided me with the tools to have memorable, fun, educational moments that I can share with others.
What I wish was different
Although I understand non-profits such as the Houston Zoo run on a very tight budget, I wish that animal care interns were given a small monthly or weekly stipend. Working 40 hours a week for 14 weeks straight (without pay) takes a toll on one’s health and finances.
Advice
My advice would be to go into it with the most positive attitude possible. There is a lot of menial cleaning work to be done, but once that’s taken care of, there are so many opportunities to see and interact with unique animals.

What I liked
Relevant lessons and experience gained towards my career. Worked with multiple carnivores.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have gained more training experience. ie: trained a behavior from start to finish.
Advice
Take this opportunity if you are interested in working with carnivores and big cats specifically. Work hard and pay attention to get the most out of the internship.

What I liked
It was very interactive and I learned so much about the animals in Natural Encounters at the Houston Zoo. It provided me with many useful skills including, public speaking, taking initiative, team work, confidence, and so much more!
What I wish was different
Honestly there is nothing I can think of that I would want to be different.
Advice
Zookeeping is very hard work but it is so worth it! Especially once you start forming relationshops with the animals you are caring for.
