Biology Research Intern
May - August 2018 • Kirtland, OH
What I liked
I REALLY loved the research I was conducting. I am curious about the physiological changes that plants undergo to aid with winter acclimation - my internship focused on the chemistry that drives seasonal changes in photo protective pigments (very relevant to my academic interests). I also loved being apart of a tight-knit community of scientists. The friends I made within the research facility were incredibly resourceful and supportive and kind :)
What I wish was different
There were parts of my research procedure that were incredibly repetitive. After three months of the same tedious procedure I was looking forward to change - I wish I was more aware of the meticulous, monotonous nature of the internship prior to starting.
Advice
Do not underestimate the power/importance of small talk in the kitchen! I was having small talk with a researcher one afternoon on a coffee break and I mentioned how I had applied to several internship programs at the rocky mountain biological laboratory (I was not accepted by any). Long story short, the researcher had worked at RMBL prior to Holden forest and gardens. She was kind enough to email her colleagues there and introduce me to several scientists - one of whom I have since corresponded with extensively. Do not hesitate to start conversation and network!
