What I liked

What I liked most about the job was the hands-on experience i received. The project involved testing and running experiments on different tank solutions which allowed me to learn a lot about electroplating and industry standard quality testing. I also like that the position allowed me to work independently while still having a supervisor for guidance.

What I wish was different

Because this was a relatively new project at the time, the first few months were a little slower than I hoped. However, it still gave me some insight into the challenges you can face in the field, and it also gave me an opportunity to assist in the engineering of solutions to the problems we ran into early on. Once we got the ball rolling I really enjoyed my time in the lab and learned a lot more than I expected.

Advice

Ask questions and listen to the advice of your supervisor and coworkers. The work environment is very friendly and most people here are happy to help you when you need it. This job requires you to learn a lot of information quickly so it's important to be open to asking for help or even general advice on things that your coworkers already have a lot of experience in. I would also say that you get what you put in, and if you really want a good experience then you need to be prepared to put some effort in, especially at the beginning. This will make your job easier down the line and also make the job more rewarding.

Quality Co-op

What I liked

I liked interacting with all facets of the Hohman's business and the people within. Some of my main ongoing tasks and projects involved maintaining databases for corrective action reports and internal tasks. Managing these put me in a position to talk to so many different people and do meaningful work. Speaking of meaningful work, I really felt that all the work I was doing was purposeful and actually contributed to the company. I was never lacking in things to do. While the work wasn't always the most interesting, it was always necessary and impactful, not just co-op busy work.

What I wish was different

Overall I enjoyed my experience at Hohman. I wish there was a clearer and more defined path for new co-op on the job training. I felt that that aspect was a little rushed at the beginning, and there wasn't a clear vision of how co-ops should be trained. However, I asked a lot of questions throughout my term, and there was always someone willing to help me with what I was doing and make sure I was doing it correctly. In addition, while not a bad thing, me being the only quality co-op meant I was usually only tackling the day-to-day regular work of a Quality tech, without much time to tackle more "engineering-based" projects. That being said, there are opportunities to flex your engineering mind and problem-solving muscles no matter what tasks you are assigned. I found plenty of ways to use critical thinking at Hohman and certainly made the most of my time there.

Advice

I would recommend to soak up as much information as you can early on, and ask as many questions as possible. If you know all the processes and procedures by heart, it will make the work later on much more seamless. Make sure to form personal relationships with people in every department. Your job will involve talking to everyone, and it's nice to have a friendly face and good groundwork before asking someone for something. Hohman is a great company with a good culture. If you're interested in quality, it's worth giving the position a try. Make sure to ask plenty of questions in the hiring process, they'll be very honest every step of the way.

Quality co-op

What I liked

At Hohman Plating, you get hands-on experience with multiple different processes. You will have the opportunity to learn about every part of the business, from day-to-day tasks to communicating with customers and finding ways to improve the company. You will always have something to work on without it just feeling like busy work. The people at Hohman Plating are friendly and always willing to help in any way you need. They want you to learn and succeed.

What I wish was different

There is not much that I would wish to be different. Hohman Plating has an extensive co-op program, with co-ops in multiple different departments across the business. The one aspect of this co-op that could have been better was the initial training I received. They have plenty of training on the different processes that are done here as well as on-the-job training, but a co-op specific training would be a great improvement.

Advice

This is not a co-op where you will have just one project to work on over the course of your term. You will have daily and weekly tasks and multiple projects looking to improve the quality system. Everything that you do here does serve a purpose for the company. You will always have someone to answer your questions, and you'll get invaluable experience.

Quality Systems Management Co-Op

What I liked

Everyone here at Hohman Plating is very knowledgeable about the systems, and the aerospace industry as a whole. The staff here wants to see you succeed and learn in your co-op role. There is enough help here to have you learn, while also making mistakes safely and learning from them. The best way is for you to do it yourself, and at Hohman, that is how they have you learn. The people at Hohman Plating are unmatched, and you will not only learn a lot, but also enjoy your time during your co-op term.

What I wish was different

There is not much I wish was different. There was enough work to keep me busy so I was not twiddling my thumbs, but not too much work where I felt as if I was drowning. If you are looking for a job where you can sit on your phone and do nothing, this is not the co-op for you. This job teaches you so much about quality software and the ins and outs, as well as the aerospace industry as a whole. You are always moving and communicating to the engineering teams, which also builds communication skills.

Advice

I would say be prepared to always be moving. This is not a bad thing by any means, as you will have jobs and projects to do. Every task and project you have to do serve some purpose for the company. You are not going to be the company water boy in this role. You serve quite an important role in this co-op and have a large responsibility. You are going to learn a lot and make mistakes, but you are nothing but safe to make those mistakes. This job has been very enjoyable, and I am not sure if I can find a company with a better environment than this one.
