Advice

Don’t let rude comments from guests get to you. It’s hard because you see them for longer and more often than any other service industry, but try to brush it off. However, report them and kick them out of the hotel if they become abusive. If your management doesn’t support you, get out.

Guest Services Representative

June - August 2019 • Lancaster, PA

What I liked

Working with people was nice, and lead to some very fulfilling experiences, connections, and stories. Also the benefits are wonderful (nightly rates for Hilton employees can be as low as $35/$45 per night)!

What I wish was different

Working with people can be as difficult as it is rewarding, especially when people complain just to get something free from your hotel (wether that be complimentary snacks or complimentary stays). Training can also be frustrating, and the shifts become long, especially if it's slow, since you're not allowed to be on your phone or have a book or anything along those lines (you have to always appear attentive in case a guest does come up to the front desk).

Advice

Patience, kindness, restraint, and a good customer-service voice are extremely useful traits to possess/imitate/master.

I wish that I had been able to shadow upper management more often.
