What I liked

I loved getting to work outside all day! It was also great to learn how things work behind the scenes at the college. I have so much more appreciation now for all the hard work the grounds crew and maintenance staff do throughout the year!

Call Center Agent

May - July 2019 • Hillsdale, MI

What I liked

The internship involved a personal project component which allowed for time to focus on finding some way of improving college life.

What I wish was different

The only down side to working in the call center is the environment. The job requires students to work in cubicles in the basement of Kendall.

Advice

Working at the call center provides students with a unique opportunity to talk with various groups we otherwise probably wouldn't be exposed to. I found it so encouraging and gratifying to speak with donors over the phone.

Admissions Intern

May - August 2019 • Hillsdale, MI

What I liked

My favorite part of this internship was working with the people in the Admissions Office. The relationships I built over the summer allowed me to develop both my personal and professional networking skills. I also loved the nature of the work! I got to work with prospective students, but I also got a taste of what an office job is actually like. It was so much fun!

What I wish was different

The only thing I would have changed is the number of hours I was allowed to work per week. They only allowed us to work 30 in one week, but the amount of work we had often required more than 30 hours.

Advice

Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone a little. I made the most out of my summer in Hillsdale by building relationships with the adults around me who previously had been in my shoes. Even if I don't end up working for admissions post grad, the I now have mentors that I did not have previously, and professional skills I did not have previously as well.

What I liked

My research project was an ecological study so I spent time in the lab and in the field. I enjoyed learning various aspects of field research and the ways it can be conducted. Working with Dr. VanZant has been a wonderful experience. He is dedicated to helping his students decide how they want to execute their research project. He is very knowledgeable and does a wonderful job guiding his students through the process.

One piece of advice I would share if you are planning to do biology research is to be creative. There are many ways to go about conducting ecological studies. I built my own fish traps using household materials.
