Highway West Vacations

Event Intern

May - August 2019 • Grand Lake, CO

What I liked

Highway West Vacations employees at the Grand Lake Lodge offered an instant welcoming atmosphere that made me feel at home almost immediately. It was a busy atmosphere that was easy to learn and grow in.

What I wish was different

Being as HWV had just acquired the Grand Lake Lodge, there were still many operating procedures that were not yet figured out. However, those are the growing pains of a company, and they have continued to strive for better and better things each year.

Advice

Working at a seasonal property brings a host of new experiences. Being away from home helps you to learn new independent skills, and creating your own network is crucial to your success in this field. I was able to do both of those things with this company and would highly recommend each student the opportunity to grow in these ways.

Revenue Analyst

June 2020 - January 2021 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

I had the opportunity to experience tasks in different departments and each project was hands on. I was given responsibilities that I was able to learn and perform during my internship.

What I wish was different

Introductions from each department is helpful in that when there is a question we know who to direct the question to.

Front Desk Agent

May 2020 • Grand Lake, CO

What I liked

Personally, this company has taught me a lot. Not only did I get to work at one of the most beautiful places in Colorado, but I also received in-depth training working at the front desk, and when needed, housekeeping. It is a great Internship to do because you get the opportunity to grow in more than one department.

What I wish was different

The main thing that dragged the experience down was the Virus. Not as many guests were able to enjoy the experience due to multiple regulations. But it was a learning process for everyone and it was kind of fun trying to come up with ways to help guests enjoy the Lodge with all the regulations.

Advice

The main piece of advice I would give would be to be an open book. You will be working very closely with everyone at the lodge, so you want to make sure that you are able to communicate with everyone easily.

Operations Intern

May - October 2019 • Grand Lake, CO

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to gain experience through moving to another state and working for a hospitality lodging company that was in beautiful Colorado, next to the Rocky Mountain National Park!

What I wish was different

I wish that our managers could have let us interns see more with their daily routines and duties as hotel managers. I would have love to see the financials and be apart of more meetings.

Advice

I recommend to any student to not be afraid to move out to another state for an internship and that so you can potentially see if you see yourself moving there and working full time! Always take notes while working and don’t be afraid to ask to do more or ask questions!
