High Meadows School

Camp Counselor

June 2015 • Roswell, GA

What I liked

Starting may is about $9/hour but they pay a little more each summer. Fantastic training programs to ensure each staff member is prepared and has the right resources to create a magical summer for the campers. Lots of stuff support and communication between age levels and different departments which helps develop a friendly and professional atmosphere. Duties may include creating activities for the children to participate in or being a group counselor responsible for getting the children to their activities.

What I wish was different

There are training videos with quizzes you have to complete before the start of camp. The first year you work there are a ton of them but there are less the next years and they aren't extremely long or complicated. They tend to be a little redundant especially year after year but this is honestly my only complaint and they really are not that bad.

Advice

Make sure you are an open-minded, flexible individual. At the end of the day we are all there to make sure the children have the best experiences they can possibly have, which means you may be put in situation that seem like they will be out of your comfort zone, but if it is what is best for the children then everything will be okay. Also you will be outside like 99% of the time during the summer, so keep that in mind when applying.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Roswell, GA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work with children in a fun environment. As an individual interested in child therapy, being a camp counselor is a resume-booster and, even though it's not the exact career I want to have one day, relelvant to my overall goals.

What I wish was different

Nothing! It was my fifth summer as a camp counselor and as always I was sad when the summer ended.

Advice

Working with children can be exhausting! You have to remember that you're giving them their summer experience -- a time of year that all kids love dearly. You have to find the balance between being responsible and being silly.
