HGA Architects and Engineers

Structural Engineering Co-Op

August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed working in my field with HGA. I have now completed two terms at HGA, with the final term to begin in January. I love the hard-working, motivated environment at HGA. There is a strong desire to create meaningful, cutting-edge projects each and every day. This is something I really value in a company and its employees: a pride in one's work and the continual desire to produce quality, meaningful results. I also really enjoyed the summer program. It was enjoyable to meet with the other interns and to have a group of mentors from the full-time staff. This program allowed us to connect in both a professional setting through weekly meetings and events at work as well as personally in group outings throughout the summer. Overall, I truly enjoyed my time at HGA and am very excited to start my final term!

What I wish was different

I hope to do some more in-depth structural work next term. As I am taking structural analysis this fall, I hope some of these techniques are put to practice in my next term. Overall, though, I really love the work environment and the time I spent at HGA, so I have very few things I would like to change.

Advice

Gaining experience is crucial to success in school as well as preparation for your future career. It is incredibly helpful to see firsthand the actual nature of the degree that you hope to obtain. As a civil engineering major, I have had internships in both the civil field and the structural field. Seeing two aspects of this major firsthand provided me with a guide for what I like and don't like about different sides of the major. So my biggest piece of advice is to gain as much experience while still in school so that you are informed and prepared for the career search when graduation approaches. Knowing exactly what to look for in different aspects of your major will allow you to be focused in your future job applications and career to come.

Summer Intern

June - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Their willingness to teach me what I didn't know. Allowed for one to learn as much as possible in only three months.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been work for me to do constantly. However as an intern that is not always possible.

Advice

Put yourself out there. Find an internship then stay in touch when you leave. The connections you make in three months can be connections that help you move up in your career later on.
