Hendrick Health

Fitness Sales Associate

January 2020 - August 2021 • Abilene, TX

What I liked

I loved getting to work with members and learn their stories. Getting to know them on a personal level, be with them in triumphs and lows, and let them into my life was such a blessing. The community at Hendrick Health Club is really unlike any other club I've seen and I appreciate very much getting to be a part of it.

What I wish was different

There were times where drama among employees was bothersome. It was nothing severe, just normal workplace selfishness, but I wish other team members understood we were just that: a team.

Advice

Don't be afraid to WORK...and not just the things in your job description. The best things I gained from this job were far beyond my expectations. Praying with my coworkers, creating relationship with the members, and learning much more about my own physical and mental health was such an eye opening experience. I learned a lot from this job and I'm really thankful for the connections I made.

Hendrick Hospice Volunteer

June 2018 • Abilene, TX

What I liked

I love being able to interact with people who truly need you. It is a humbling experience, that allowed me to grow as an individual. I truly believe that through my interactions with staff and patients, I am a better person for it.

What I wish was different

Hospice, as you can probably assume, is not always the most cheery place. It’s a difficult yet unavoidable process in life, and I’m grateful for my small role I played in helping patients and families find comfort in it.

Advice

For this position you really need to understand grief, and also understand how your own empathy plays a role in other people’s grief. Even though you’re just an unpaid volunteer, what you bring to the table makes a huge difference in other people’s lives.

CNA

May 2019 • Abilene, TX

What I liked

I liked getting to work in a hospital setting, meeting and talking to patients and getting to help them, and building a reputation with Hendrick and my floor's nurses

What I wish was different

Working night shift was a good experience, but very hard on my body since I was also working another job and taking a couple classes.

Advice

If you're a nursing student, working as a CNA at some point is a great experience:) It exposes you to a lot of what goes on in a hospital and on the floor, and if it goes well can be a great foot in the door to nursing positions at that hospital if you graduate and still want to work there.

Patient Care Technician

June 2019 • Abilene, TX

What I liked

I liked that it furthered my experience as a future nurse by allowing me to take on total care for 5 patients with nursing skills practice such as wound care, IV start and removal, foley start and removal, and the occasional staples removal and other small things. I love the staff that I work with and I really get to know my patients as they usually stay for long periods of time.

What I wish was different

I do wish that I had shown more interest in the PEDIATRICS unit of the hospital since I am looking into that the most. I am on an adult floor that I love; however, it is irrelevant in some parts in the future career that I am reaching for.

Advice

I would suggest to those starting early in college to really focus on GPA because with passion, most hires are looking for a solid GPA of at least a 3.5 to getting into a nurse residency program and children's hospitals look for that higher GPA. Come prepared for interviews and expect the unexpected.

Patient Care Technician

December 2018 • Abilene, TX

What I liked

It is an amazing opportunity to take the skills and critical thinking and apply it in real life. It is meant to be a transition for senior students moving into an independent RN position.

What I wish was different

I do wish it was easier to work during the semesters, but the hours make it so hard. I am on night shifts and all my classes are in the morning.

Advice

If you can, do it! It has completely changed my view of nursing and elevated my confidence to a whole new level. I couldn’t imagine starting a job without having had this experience.
