Hazen and Sawyer

Environmental Technician Intern

May - August 2022 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

Great company, learned a ton, and had some great mentors.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have asked more questions and explored more different types of work

Advice

Make sure to meet with supervisor at beginning of Internship to define expectations and goals. This will set you up with a good start and allow you to know your employers expectations and for them to know your goals.

Engineering Technician

May 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

Hazen is a large national company with a "frontier" branch in Detroit. The smaller office environment provided unique opportunities to be involved with many different projects in meaningful ways. Hazen is also very open to "flex time," which is critical when a student is trying to balance classes, work, and life.

What I wish was different

The only thing I could want is more field experience. I have spent a lot of time at the wastewater plant, but my class schedule kept me from traveling to other field sites.

Advice

Being on top of your own game is key. I kept detailed notes on what I was asked to do and when they needed to be completed, and stuck to that plan. Being independent and only asking questions when you've exhausted personal attempts to solve the problems has been key for being a useful employee.
