Hawaiian Electric Company

Treasury and Financial Services Intern

June - November 2018 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

It was a great company culture with a great team! A lot of learning experiences and fun opportunities for "field trips."

What I wish was different

I wish it led into an opportunity for full-time permanent employment, but I know that those types of opportunities depend on many things, especially timing. Although I was offered to stay on longer, it was not as a permanent employee, and it was in a different department. Though, I believe there would have been an opportunity to stay on permanently if I had stayed a little longer.

Advice

Absolutely do it. It's a great opportunity, not to mention it paid very well for an internship! No regrets and lots of learning AND networking opportunities.

Financial Reporting Compliance Intern

May - August 2018 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I enjoyed that I was given real work to do. The work that I was assigned to contributed to their internal SOX control testing. I was able to learn so much about the process about auditing a company's internal controls as well as about the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002.

What I wish was different

I wish I had received more training on the software and the procedures beforehand.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to go into it with an open mind and a ready-to-learn mindset. If you do this, you'll be able to walk away with way more experience and knowledge than you would have expected.
