Gyu-Kaku

Dining Room Host/Hostess

June 2018 • Rancho Cucamonga, CA

What I liked

I like everything about this job. My coworkers, managers, and checks are great. I get paid well in tips considering how easy my job is and how little work I do compared to the rest of the restaurant.

What I wish was different

Dealing with clients can be very frustrating at times, because people can be so rude.

Advice

it was very fulfilling to get paid for my work! However, one must be prepared for problem customers and know how to deal with them well.

Restaurant Host/Hostess

June 2020 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I liked the team that I worked with, especially with management. Management was very understanding about unforeseen circumstances and take on the responsibility of their workers when short-staffed. Team members are more than colleagues, but we are a family and we look out for one another.

What I wish was different

Personally, I wish that this company's turnover rate would decrease. The number of employees I had to train just to have them leave the company after about a month of being employed is ridiculous. However, it is understandable that this job is not for everyone and is more for part-time opportunities rather than a career. Also, not a lot of people can handle the high demands of the restaurant industry. For example, as a host/hostess at Gyu-Kaku, we are expected to answer phone calls, take reservations and phone orders, seat customers, manage the waitlist and online orders, prepare takeout orders, perform hourly sanitation, clean the bathrooms, and set, buss, and reset the tables and grills. Not a lot of people would expect all of these responsibilities as a host or hostess.

Advice

The restaurant industry and customer service are not for everyone. There will be times when you will be overwhelmed and feel as if you have too much on your plate. Regardless of your job title or any situation you may be in, never be afraid to reach out to your colleague for help. You may all have your own individual job title with different responsibilities, but you all are a team and you have each others' backs.

July - August 2018 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I loved my work family, the pace of the job, and feeling respected for having good work ethic and performing well in a high pressure environment.

What I wish was different

I wish the commute was shorter and that I could have had earlier hours, but that’s about it.

Advice

Hard work pays off! Also, socialize and get to know your co-workers! Making friends at work is one sure fire way to keep the job from becoming unbearable.
