Structural Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I was allowed a lot of freedom within the role. I was taught plenty and made sure to learn a lot as well but when I was handed projects I was given a lot of autonomy in what I did. I also got to work on a variety of projects some involving doing simple drawings, some from a more managerial role, and some just maintenance.

What I wish was different

I felt like I wasn't given enough work early on. This wasn't necessarily their fault as things were in flux because of facilities changing.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and lean on tribal knowledge. Also, even if things appear good on the outside, you have no idea what is happening behind the scenes.

Structural Engineering Intern

May - December 2017 • Savannah, GA

What I liked

I liked that I was able to feel like any other entry level engineer. It took a while to get my skills so that my supervisors can trust me, but i was never just twiddling my fingers. I always had something to do. I attended meeting with top level officers and customers, and actually made a direct impact in the production of the aircraft.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more goals, with one big task to do, instead of small to medium tasks.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to people and showcase your skills.

Engineering Co-op

January 2019 • Savannah, GA

What I liked

Level of work provided was similar to an entry level position. Everybody at the company was very willing to help me learn anything I didn’t know.

What I wish was different

The ability to chose departments we want to explore more would have been nice. They allow you to make a list of your top three, but it is not always fulfilled.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Being proactive is the best thing you can do in industry. If you are not sure about something, ask, being that this is aerospace it is important to get things right the first time around.

Flight Controls System College Intern

May - August 2018 • Pooler, GA

What I liked

I always felt welcome within my team despite being put into an area partly outside of my academic coursework. The company culture is amazing and countless opportunities to construct a successful career exist. I learned invaluable skills which I would not have learned through my coursework, such as 3D CAD design and working on avionics parts.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked on more projects involving heavier coding or working on electronic systems whether than solely avionics parts and structures. (Main reason for the lack of projects involving coding/electronic systems was due to my department being between FCC revisions)

Advice

Network with your co-workers and try to visit other departments and areas within the company.

ERP Supply Chain Fulfillment Intern

June - August 2018 • Savannah, GA

What I liked

I really liked the role I had with the company. My job was to assist the ERP team with implementing an enterprise software (SAP) over the entire corporation. More specifically, I helped the supply chain division with software configuration and troubleshooting in procurement and warehousing.

What I wish was different

Due to a lengthy on-boarding process, I was unable to start until the middle of summer. What I wish to be different was having more time with the company.

Advice

Make sure to take in as much as you can to get the most out of your internship. Also, meet as many people as you can and build a network that will follow you into your professional career.

What I liked

The networking and the internship program.

What I wish was different

My job was very boring and the job description wasn’t up to date.

Manufacturing Quality Intern

June - August 2017 • Savannah, GA

What I liked

Such a great work environment, still feels like a small company so everyone is very personal and willing to talk to you even as an intern, even if you're in an entirely different department. Very proud of product and very hands on.

What I wish was different

Gulfstream pays by graduation year, which in a five year program isn't ideal.

Advice

Gulfstream is very open to seeing other departments, for example, I saw Flight Test while I was a Manufacturing Intern. If your boss doesn't take the initiative to show you different things, ask around and see if someone will take you, because it's much easier to see different departments and experiments than you'd expect.
