REU intern
June - August 2019 • Portland, ME
What I liked
GMRI had such a welcoming environment and they made you feel like family. I also had the chance to do some incredible things. I traveled 20 miles offshore on a tuna boat and saw whales, huge schools of bluefin tuna, and sharks, I caught baby lobsters by hand while snorkeling, and I witnessed hundreds of river herring swim upstream to spawn. I also got to work with some brilliant researchers.
What I wish was different
Nothing, it was perfect and so hard to leave.
Advice
I never thought I would get this internship, it was a complete shot in the dark when I applied. But I'm so happy I did because it was one of the best experiences of my life! I've never had so much fun while learning so much. I would encourage any science major to apply for the National Science Foundation REU programs, they're so beneficial for preparing students for the next step in their academic and professional careers.
