Front Desk Agent

January - December 2022 • Tomkins Cove, NY

What I liked

I loved my coworkers in my department and in others as well. We all shared camaraderie with one another; even if something was not in our job description, there would always be someone lending a hand.

What I wish was different

Upper management in my property was not the greatest. There were some unrealistic expectations set, which was, in part, due to staffing issues. Micromanagement and unfavorable treatment was definitely present. The HR department on property was not able to assist us in these issues becuase upper management wanted to handle it themselves. You have the option to escalate these issues via a corporate hotline, but many employees did not want to cause such a fuss, which left some issues unresolved.

Advice

If you don't let management get under your skin, this would be a great first job in the industry.

Cashier

August 2022 • Lakeland, FL

What I liked

The management is really nice and they work hard to not interfere with your class schedule and will only give you as many hours as you ask for.

What I wish was different

There would be better communication between day and night shifts.

Advice

Be ready to handle multiple tasks at once because during rush hours you can get 20 orders in 7 minutes. Also be willing and ready to learn more positions than just what you applied for.

Tax Intern

May 2019 • Fairfax, VA

What I liked

I had a rewarding experience working as a Tax Intern. The supervisor did a great job at communicating with me and thinking in my best interest to grow as a professional. I was given multiple opportunities to work on various tax projects and develop soft skills that I can apply to my future career. There is a big learning curve that comes with the internship, but I would recommend the position to anyone who likes a challenge. Overall, this was a very informative internship.

What I wish was different

The people are nice and helpful. I would not change a thing.

Advice

There is a great amount of problem solving in the internship. Try to understand the core issue and use all your resources to fix the problem, so that it will not occur in the future.

Retail employee

June - August 2019 • Big Sur, CA

What I liked

I loved the personal atmosphere of the lodge. It was very people-friendly.

What I wish was different

I wish that employees had more say in their work schedules and that their rights were protected more systematically instead of it being up to each manager to treat their workers well.

Advice

Moving to Big Sur for the summer was way more than the job. That place changed my life. I went through an organization called ACMNP and I would absolutely recommend it.

Tax Intern

June 2018 • Fairfax, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work and the people I met. I think I gained a lot of practical experience and knowledge I couldn't get in the classes, and I am sure it will carry me a long way in my future career. It was a lot of hard work since I had no experience in corporate tax and licensing, but it definitely helped me improve my critical thinking skill. Also, the supervisor is flexible as long as you communicate and have a plan to finish the work.

What I wish was different

The work environment and people are great.

Advice

Utilize your internship to make the most out of it. Try to understand the meaning behind the numbers and regulations instead of just doing the assigned work.

Tax Intern

November 2016 - June 2018 • Fairfax, VA

What I liked

The internship is a great opportunity for anyone new to the business field. The manager I worked under really helped me grow as a professional by allowing me to help out on relevant tax projects and process difficult tasks on my own. Anyone that is interested in a tough, but rewarding experience should apply. The people there are really nice and the lessons to be learned will carry you into your future careers.

What I wish was different

I thought management created a great working environment, and I wouldn't change a thing.

Advice

This one sounds simple, but think before asking questions. Most of the time the answers can be found online or tucked away in a past return. The manager will often be busy, so learning how to critically think will lead to an overall more successful internship experience.
