Federal Tax Support Intern

June 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the people I worked with because it was a small, tight-knit team. I also liked that I was given real work and never felt bored, which improved my learning experience in the internship as well as my overall personal experience. I also got the chance to interview Guardian's CFO and Chief Investments Officer as part of Guardian's Intern Day panel, which was a huge privilege seeing as few college students have a chance to have that kind of personal interaction with the executives of a Fortune 500 company.

Advice

One thing I learned in my internship experience is don't be afraid to ask for more work, or take part in a particular project you found interesting. Most people you'll work with or for will be happy to give you work, but while they are focusing on their own work they may not be thinking about what you are busy with. Ask for work if you are beginning to feel bored or if you want to take part in a project you find interesting, because that kind of initiative builds relationships with the people you are working with and also makes you stand out when it comes time for supervisors to make full-time hiring positions.

Northeast Regional Sales Intern

What I liked

It was a tremendous experience all around. I really enjoyed working in a corporate atmosphere and interacting with seasoned professionals. I also loved learning a ton about business to business sales as well as the insurance industry.

What I wish was different

I have no real complaints about the program, great all around.

Advice

Learn as much as you can during your first internship experience because it goes a long way when applying for jobs or another internship.

Business Management Analyst

What I liked

Everyone in the office was so willing to help me learn and grow my skill set. All of my projects were meaningful and helped the company, rather than being busy work.

What I wish was different

The program had a bit of a slow start, and they did not extend offers to any of the interns, which we were not told going into the summer.

Advice

Ask for work and find projects that you are passionate about. They are very willing to give you work that you want to do.

Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • Holmdel Township, NJ

What I liked

I really liked the people I worked with

What I wish was different

The actual work I did was a bit boring, it was mostly IT work but I had such a good time with my team and learning new things that I didn't mind all that much

Advice

I was completely unqualified for this job when I applied, but the application made the job seem much harder than it actually was. Apply to everything because you're probably qualified

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2018 • Bethlehem, PA

What I liked

I learned a lot about my field of study, what kind of work I'd actually be doing, and more information about the industry as a whole. I also learned a lot about Guardian, both professionally and personally. Everyone at Guardian was great, they were all nice and were more than willing to help me, as well as each other, out.

What I wish was different

One thing that would've greatly helped me in the beginning of my internship was if the department put together a list or explained to us some of the commonly used acronyms. I learned the ones I worked with, but there was some confusion in the beginning, as I haven't heard many of them before.

Advice

My best advice is to have faith in yourself and believe in yourself. When I first started, I was a little overloaded and nervous that I wasn't going to be able to do my assigned work. But working through the first project, I gained more confidence in my ability and everything became easier to understand. I caused myself a lot of unneeded stress and worrying!
