I learned everything I know while interning for the Great Miami Valley YMCA. There was a perfect balance of freedom and direction so that I could be taught and also learn on my own. This internship gave me the skills to work with different programs and equipment that I haven't gotten to do at other jobs within the field. I enjoyed the small office experience that offered the opportunity for everyone who worked there to know my name despite being such a big organization. I was instantly comfortable here and hated that I had to leave at the end of the summer.
What I wish was different
This is a new program so although there may be a bump or two along the road, everything was adjusted to your work and personal schedule if something came up.
Advice
Invest yourself into this internship because there are many connections to be made within this community whether it is other employees of the YMCA or members you work with. It is very much a "you get what you give" experience. If you do not put in the work and open yourself up to everything offered then you won't learn and help yourself or the YMCA.
