Activities Concierge

June - September 2019 • Jackson, WY

What I liked

I was living in a national park, there wasn’t ever a day it wasn’t gorgeous outside. I got to swim in hot springs, meet a bunch of new people from all over the world, and visit a bunch of cool new places. The lodge itself is about an hour away from yellowstone national park, so checking that out was pretty cool. There were so many hikes to go on I wasn’t able to do all the ones I wanted but my favorite is named Delta. It’s a little bit of a secret, so go with a partner.

What I wish was different

The lodge is about an hour from the town of jackson, so if you wanted to do anything not close by you need to drive pretty far. Colter Bay was close, they had a few neat things to do.

Advice

Go if you want to meet a bunch of different kinda of people, or if you want to try and figure out who you are as a person. You have so days where you hear people are camping, and they may run into and invite you and you don’t know who they are. It’s really eye opening to learn how people act in the real world. If you want to work at the activities desk, I say good luck. If I were to go back I would want to try something else. Activities has a lot of work, more than the other jobs and you get paid the same. So, I would work either in the restaurants where you can get tips.

Shipping and Recieiving

May - August 2019 • Moran, WY

What I liked

The sense of community the work brought. We were a small department who saw each other every day, but beyond that, the 500 or so seasonal employees all lived in the same village in the national park, so there was a close bond between all of us.

What I wish was different

I think the value of the work being done, especially for those in the kitchens, was worth more than near the state minimum wage, but that's really a minor complaint.

Advice

Make sure to enjoy your environment; living in a national park is a blessing and there is so much offered outside of work for you to enjoy between hiking, kayaking, site seeing, touring, and so many more.

Groundskeeper / Recycling Technician

May - August 2018 • Moran, WY

What I liked

I loved getting to live in a National Park and working outside. The job was also very flexible and I was able to define many of my own projects and goals for the grounds-keeping / recycling team.

What I wish was different

If I had had a car, I would have gotten to do more hiking / climbing outside of work, but I was still able to do quite a bit!

Advice

Taking a summer to live in the woods was fantastic for my mental health and for understanding the world and getting to interact with people from all over the country and the world. I would recommend GTLC specifically to anyone, but looking at other parks would also be great!

Corral Wrangler

June - August 2018 • Moran, WY

What I liked

I really enjoyed living in a different place, meeting guests from all around the United States and from around the world. I also had the opportunity to do a lot of hiking and backpacking while I was there, which is an activity I enjoy sharing with other people.

Advice

Be mindful, yet weary; be open to new opportunities and new ways of thinking, yet confident in your own beliefs and have the ability to defend them. Many many people I lived and worked with were lost and searching for what to believe. Being a Christian in this setting can be difficult but also very rewarding.
