Grainger

Inside Sales Intern

June - August 2021 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I liked the camaraderie that I developed among coworkers as well as the emphasis placed on personal development. I enjoyed the executive learning sessions where I got to learn from CEO DG Macpherson and CFO Deidra Merriweather. I was able to develop interpersonal skills in my time at Grainger by selling products and customer oriented solutions to customers.

Advice

Come into the internship with a willingness to learn from others. Seek out a mentor in a higher position that can teach you how to move up in the organization. Be willing to learn from failure and be receptive to feedback.

Public Affairs and Communications Intern

June - August 2019 • Lake Forest, IL

What I liked

So many opportunities for interns! We had tons of intern-specific events in the Lake Forest and Chicago area and got incredible access to leadership in Grainger. We had weekly sessions with each member of the Executive Board to get to learn about their career trajectory and get advice. I also really enjoyed my project and the structure of the internship in general.

What I wish was different

More opportunities to work from the Grainger downtown office.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and try to get involved with as many different departments as possible. They really emphasize cross-functional work and people are willing to work with you and meet with you.

Business Analyst Intern

May - August 2017 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Great entrepreneurial and self-driven environment with a good focused strategy towards innovation and continuous improvement. A culture of independent work but at the same time collaboration is very important to make everything work.

What I wish was different

Since it's a very independent culture, instructions or guidance were sometimes vague and uncertain. Some of the HR procedures were not communicated well. The mix of interns was disappointing, many didn't seem to care for the company which made genuine collaboration difficult.

Advice

Expect to be challenged from day one. Be ready to ask a lot of questions, never assume anything, they love when you ask meaningful questions and they look for employees that are proactive and are eager to grow within the company and do their job as interns well, but who also are considering their future within the company seriously. Curiosity and smart contributions are highly regarded. The more confident and respectful you show yourself, the more they will treat you as more than a college intern.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Lake Forest, IL

What I liked

Everyone at Grainger seemed to really be looking out for you. It was so easy to schedule shadowing and informational interview opportunities with people in other parts of the business than my internship. There were also a lot of great social opportunities, and the housing arrangement was very generous (fully paid individual rooms in a nearby hotel for the whole summer), and also provided another avenue for interns to socialize with each other outside of work.

What I wish was different

For technical roles, things were kind of confusing on what the career opportunities and progression would be if we were to return full-time after the internship and graduation. This is largely because they were developing a new rotational program, which seems really promising.

Advice

Grainger truly emphasizes growth during this internship: there are so many opportunities for people to take ownership and additional responsibility, both within the scope and beyond the scope of your role. Doing this will allow for much more profound professional and personal development.

What I wish was different

Backend Software Engineer

May - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Relaxed work environment, great coworkers, fantastic office location, and interesting work.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more informed between accepting my offer and starting the position. I did not know which office I would be placed in for most of the school year, I had to cancel travel plans due to ambiguity around the date of the drug test, and I do not own a car which made transporting myself to this drug test extremely difficult.

Advice

Try to get placed in the downtown office if possible. Many of the interns are based out of Lakeforest, IL which is where Grainger's headquarters are. Lakeforest is more suburban, which some may like, but I thought think that downtown Chicago has more to do and is in general a more interesting place to live.
