What I liked

1. Learning curve through involvement in different projects 2. Interaction with SVP level management and the CEO himself! 3. Well organized intern program

What I wish was different

Equipment Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • East Fishkill, NY

What I liked

My supervisors and mentors were very nice and helpful. I was given meaningful work that helped the team, and I was given hands-on exposure to the tools and equipment used in the fab. The location and surrounding area were nice, and there were plenty of things to do outside of work.

What I wish was different

Given the COVID situation at the time, it would have been difficult, but I wish we had more opportunities to meet other interns at the site.

Advice

Ask questions and be sure to stay in constant contact with your supervisors.

Senior Engineer

April - November 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

It was great opportunity to grow professionally and personally. All my extensive PhD experience allowed to earn good reputation among my colleagues from day one. And even though work in industry is completely different from the research assistant one, I enjoyed it immensely.

What I wish was different

The camaraderie environment is not as present in industry as it is in the university lab. I wish people were spending more time together and communicated more closely during work hours.

FEH wafer test mechanical design group intern

May - August 2018 • Essex, VT

What I liked

Great experience in engineering theory application to a modern and growing industry. The mentor that helped me along the way was very knowledgeable. He gave me space to do the work I had to do and was always there if I had questions. Great team to show me the ropes of an unfamiliar industry.

What I wish was different

More structure within the internship. When I first got there, there was not much work to be done except for reading manuals of CAD programs and other things I'd be working with. These were kind of helpful, but starting by just reading lab reports and manuals for 7 hours a day for the first couple of weeks while I got oriented got to be pretty monotonous (especially when there are so many specific acronyms/diction specific to the industry that I was unfamiliar with).

Advice

Read up on the company and the industry thoroughly before starting work. I had done my homework, but going in with more knowledge will give you a great edge in starting.

Chemistry and Materials Science Intern

May - August 2018 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

Great opportunity for more lab experience in a corporate setting.

What I wish was different

n/a

Advice

Due to the complexity of the production of semi-conductors, there are so many aspects of the manufacturing process that it is hard to understand exactly what is going on. That being said, all I can recommend is to ask as many questions as possible. It will help you get a better feel for what you are supposed to do and will help those around you as they are forced to learn more about the processes to answer your questions.

Facilities Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Malta, NY

What I liked

Exposure to manufacturing environment, with ability to learn and grow in multiple areas.

What I wish was different

Management was poor, structure of intern project and responsibilities were unclear.

Advice

Make sure that you are self-driven and take personal responsibility for whatever you are working on. Your manager and technical mentor will not always be there to tell you exactly what you should be doing, so it is important that you take ownership of your project.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2018 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

Very independent work with a lot of experience in several well known programs. Very relevant and transferable skills that can be used anywhere. Also worked with great people that helped me build a great professional network.

What I wish was different

I do wish there was a little more guidance and structure to the experience I found myself with a lot of free time here and there in between downtime with the projects I was handling.

Advice

Make work for yourself. Constantly be looking for work to do or finding ways to help others and make things easier for everyone else there. If you can streamline a process and make the work easier for everyone there that does it everyday you will be remembered.
