GE Healthcare

Materials Intern

May 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

Real project with real impact on the business. Very growth-focused and willing to invest in their people.

What I wish was different

The interview and onboarding process is long and convoluted. Unfortunately it's a corporate thing, but stick it out because the site is worth it!

Advice

Make your intentions known! Do a good job and if you want to stick around, ask!

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Wawatosa, WI

What I liked

The internship was overall a leadership training experience, which was really exciting on top of having a software focused role. We learned a lot about the business importance of our projects and work.

What I wish was different

I think there were some issues when picking our assignment leaders, as a few other interns as well as I had to have modified projects or empty parts of our workload due to some of them being gone/busy/simply focused on other tasks. All of this was communicated though by us so I wouldn't worry about it repeating.

Advice

I think the biggest thing that I learned is that any technical role as just as much communication skills needed to be able to work well in a business setting. Seeing and hearing the differences between teams when they spoke with each other well and often and not really opened my eyes of how much could go wrong when a team doesn't have full cohesion.

There are so many career options that don't align with what you learn in school, don't limit yourself.

OMLP Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2019 • Florence, SC

What I liked

It was a great experience because I actually got to work on projects that helped improve business performance! I highly recommend any engineering major to apply.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more events for interns. Since Florence, SC is not the main hub for interns, there were not too many events that took place. If you desire more intern events, choose to be located at one of the facilities in or near Wisconsin. However, if you do end up in Florence, SC, Myrtle Beach is only 1.5 hours away, Charlotte, NC is 2 hours away, Atlanta, GA is 4 hours away, and Orlando, FL is 6.5 hours away :).

Advice

Regardless of the location that you end up, BE CURIOUS, ASK QUESTIONS, and WORK HARD! You will learn a lot!

Communication Intern

May - August 2019 • Mequon, WI

What I liked

I appreciated the creative freedom I was given when assigned projects. They encouraged me to really think outside the box in a more conservative industry that can seem so black and white. My work were things that I knew would outlast my time at GE making me feel like I really made an impact on the company even through I am no longer with them.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work with a team and collaborate with others since my field of work is more creative.

Advice

To utilize all connections made by keeping track of other employer's contact information along with making sure to keep all bodies of work to use as samples for future job endeavors
