GameStop

Senior Game Advisor

July - September 2022 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

My first manager was really great, taught me the job well, it was overall pretty easy and chill and the hours weren't too bad. You get a decent discount and all of the job procedures are easy to pick up.

What I wish was different

Your schedule isn't available online, so you either have to track it down through one of your coworkers or a manager. No formal system for time off either so you just kinda have to hope your manager remembers.

Advice

You'll build up really good sales skills if you work here, they don't advertise this but you get performance based commission.

What I liked

I had a fantastic manager for the first 2/3 of my time working there, as well as some great co-workers. My second manager was also very experienced, but I could tell that GameStop was going through a lot of changes, some good and some bad. I really enjoyed the conversations that I had with our regulars - it was so fun to talk to people that also really cared about video games and systems! There is also a lot of overlap with cartoon/anime/etc. fans, which was nice. Sometimes you could win free games from the different developers if you kept up to date with your Level Up, which was a quiz program with information about new releases. You could also get leftover bonuses from new releases if they oversent or if people didn't pick up their bonus items (like pins, posters. etc.). The work wasn't super demanding at my level since I just had to interact with guests, answer questions, work the register, and organize games. Sometimes my managers would try to get me to do other jobs that weren't in my description or that I literally couldn't do since I didn't have the right access to the computers, but it was mostly a non-issue.

What I wish was different

GameStop is definitely going through a lot of changes. While I had a decent time there, there is still a culture in video games surrounding minorities and gender that can be very weird, so it's not for everyone. Sometimes you get very rude guests who talk down to you or don't understand what they're talking about, so they don't trust your advice (especially if you're a woman). This is just a thing that comes with retail, but it's unfortunate. Hours fluctuated a lot. As a guest advisor, I couldn't open or close, so I was less valuable than my SGAs and managers. I usually got the worst hours and worked the least out of everyone. Sometimes this was good, since I could focus on studying, but other times it just didn't feel worth it, especially since I'd be working like 3 hours a week for $8 an hour. Corporate just added more hours before I left, but who knows if it'll stay that way.

Advice

GameStop is a good place to work if you just need a bit of extra cash, not really a long-term career. It was perfect for me because I was able to stay home during the time I was working there, but at my position and for my pay it just wasn't something I could see myself doing for a long time. There are other retail jobs available that give better benefits and hourly wages. If you plan on working at GameStop, definitely remember to take care of your mental and physical health. Your experiences will likely be predominantly positive, but there will be challenging times when you just don't know much about a system or a customer gets upset. It's okay to Google things, make calls, or just say that you don't know. Expect to be on your feet all day. Try to have some kind of video game knowledge and stay up to date with big releases and events.

What I liked

The coworkers, the generally easy work load.

What I wish was different

District leaders actually acknowledging accomplishments, realistic goals, less threat of losing my job over numbers I don’t have much control over.

Advice

It’s a good job to meet cool people that you’ll be working with, but I wouldn’t recommend it in general because of how hard employees are pushed over numbers. Especially trade numbers which are the hardest to change.

Advice

I would advice to relax and be yourself, but also be respectful and responsible.

Retail

February 2018 - August 2019 • Melrose, MA

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

To take this job, you need to be really good at selling. It's fun hanging out with cool people and talking about games, but at the end of the day, what they don't tell you is how aggressive the Sale's culture is at GameStop as opposed to larger retailer's. Certain stores are easier than others, but at the end of your day, your numbers matters.
