Assistant Cook

June - August 2020 • Grapeland, TX

What I liked

The community developed within staff, the opportunity to work in some form with children in a camp program, and the encouragement and support of the full-time staff. There is a strong sense of unity intentionally developed among the summer staff at Frontier Camp. Each staff member shares the same greater goal of evangelism and discipleship, which allows us to support each other as we minister to children. Camp is also a place to work hard together, and it forges a strong bond among staff.

What I wish was different

I would have preferred to have more time to interact with the children, but the circumstances were unique this summer. I was a kitchen staff member, and it was prudent for people who did not have direct supervision over the children to avoid interacting as much with them this summer in order to avoid spreading a contagious disease. On any other summer, there would be more time to see and interact with the campers outside of meal times.

Advice

This is not a job done for the pay. If you are interested in working here, make sure that you completely agree with the vision and mission of Frontier Camp. It is a fulfilling job if you are committed to the same goals as your employers.

Activity Leader

May - August 2019 • Grapeland, TX

What I liked

I loved how Frontier Camp didn't sugar-coat or incorrectly explain the Gospel. I also loved seeing that there were kids that have come here 5 years in a row because of how great this camp is. Finally, I really enjoyed setting up ropes courses, facilitating, and being a lifeguard alongside great, intentional staff.

What I wish was different

I had such a great experience that I can't find any real fault with the camp.

Advice

Come into this job with the intention to serve, not for money. The attitude we should have when entering into this sort of job is a heart of humility and an attitude where we seek to give more than we receive.
