What I wish was different
Leadership Engagement: The owners Sam and Dylan appeared disinterested in connecting with paying volunteers and participants. This lack of engagement created an environment that felt disruptive rather than welcoming.
Communication Challenges: Communication issues within the organization were prevalent, characterized by bossiness and illogical refusals. Example: Instead of addressing concerns directly, Sam resorted to gossiping behind peoples backs, subtle bullying and making sarcastic comments.
Authoritarian Behavior: Sam's leadership style was authoritarian and she had a tendency to handle situations with aggression rather than effective communication and understanding. Example: During volleyball sessions Sam would be aggressive, exclude weaker players and show lack of sportsmanship. Besides, Sam would get angry over small things, such as someone mistakenly taking "her" cup. In addition, during an incident where a volunteer attempted to rescue a cat, causing a scratch in the wooden floor, Sam reacted with anger rather than understanding.
Treatment Disparities: Disparities in treatment between volunteers and employees, coupled with impositions on lifestyle and diet, contributed to a less-than-ideal experience. Example: Volunteers were given the privilege to eat in common areas, while employees were relegated to the kitchen. Attempts to join employees in the kitchen were met with hostility, with no logical explanation provided (“because I say so”).
Thinking about my time there, I'd say it would be great if everyone – leaders and the team – could chat more openly and work together. Creating good ways to talk and making sure everyone feels included could really make things better. It's all about making the place feel like everyone matters and their voices are heard.
