Policy and Research Intern

January - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked how I was able to learn and work across a variety of policy issues and felt really involved in the work. I learned a lot of skills that I continue to use in my academic and professional life. The other employees were very caring and made the effort to create a warm and welcoming workplace. They gave me challenging work to help me grow but also supported me throughout the process.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more of a structural professional development program specifically for interns. Even though I received personalized professional development from the different employees, it wasn’t built into the internship program in the beginning. However, as I continued my internship, they began to create more of a formalized program.

Advice

If there is a client you’re interested in working with or a project you are interested in, take initiative and ask. They are very receptive and want to ensure that you doing work you are interested in.
