I really enjoy working alongside two wonderful psychology professors at FHSU. Even though I feel underqualified for the position, they ensure that my thoughts and research ideas are heard. It is also really valuable just to be able to sit on zoom and listen to them have conversations about our topic.. they are both so intelligent. It has been great to learn about psychological principles, testing measures, procedures, and about the research process in general through experience rather than through a class.
What I wish was different
We have spent this semester researching mindfulness in preschoolers in hopes that we would be able to collect data in the spring. Unfortunately, we came to the realization that schools will probably not let us in to conduct these measures for a long time, and it is more logical to change our research topic. COVID sort of forced us to start back at square one, but now we are directing our research to some of the psychological affects of COVID, compartmentalization, identity, and blended roles. I am actually more pleased with the direction our research is going now, as it is looking deeper into concepts that don't have quite as much literature already out there. I want our research to be new and valuable to the field of psychology and the community, and I think our current work will be very applicable.
Advice
The sole reason I had this opportunity to work alongside these professors is because I had one of them as a professor last semester. She really liked my work and encouraged me to continue pursuing psychology and research. We had an open line of communication and maintained mutual respect for one another. I reached out to her to simply thank her for her class and express my interest in future research, and just like that, she asked me to be a part of a project the coming semester. So, if I could suggest one thing, it would be to work hard in your classes and build strong relationships with your professors. Even if you don't do undergraduate research with them, you may use them as a reference in the future. Networking is important.

What I liked
I liked the interaction of campers. Being a friendly and open face for them to talk to or ask questions. Being proud of my university and helping out as needed.
What I wish was different
Would have liked more hours. Seemed like there was either 500 things to do all at once or nothing to do. There seemed to be a lack of communication as well.
