What I liked

Everyone at Formlabs is really smart and cares a lot about the future of 3D printing. Even as an intern, I felt like I was taken seriously and able to influence real design decisions. The perks are also great: unlimited free 3D printing, free snacks, fairly flexible hours, etc.

What I wish was different

A lot of the work I did was more of small-scale manufacturing rather than "mechanical engineering" in the traditional sense, meaning I did less design and anaylsis and more process optimization. I definitely enjoyed the work, and I would return to Formlabs in the future, but I'd want to do a little more design/analysis work.

Advice

Be humble and willing to learn, but be assertive and take responsibility for your internship experience. Also, take advantage of the great perks!

Recruiting Intern

What I liked

There were a lot of great perks at the company, like free food and a flexible work schedule. It was decent pay for an internship (see more below), and I did feel like I gained a lot of experience.

What I wish was different

I was supposed to be hired full time but they hired me as an intern in order to save money on giving me benefits and stock options. I was supposed to be evaluated after 3 months, but it wasn't until 7 months in that there was any effort to make a full time offer (which I declined). I was given minimal direction and expected to do recruiting for software developers with no experience or assistance. Despite the fact that I was highly successful I was given no additional compensation or recognition of any kind.
