Folio Literary Management

Editorial Intern

June 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved getting to work with such a talented group of other aspiring publishers, and I loved getting advice and expertise from the editorial assistant under whom I worked.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been able to work in person.

Advice

Never turn down an opportunity to volunteer for a new task at your internship!

Intern

September 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the flexible hours, being able to read books and give feedback, and the opportunity to learn during Intern Academy. I was also very lucky that everything was online for COVID so I was able to do this internship remotely.

What I wish was different

I kind of wish I was able to connect with my agent and co-interns more. I'm sure regularly the in-person interns can do that but I know I'm lucky to have remote access to this internship.

Advice

Just set aside a few hours each day to get work done. And figure out what books you're reviewing early so you can review books you enjoy. Also, pay attention to the Intern Academy emails to see if there's any homework for that week--you don't want to be the one intern caught unawares.

Editorial Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved going to work everyday! I really enjoyed the actual work that I was doing, as well as the office culture and the other interns. I genuinely looked forward to work and was sad to leave.

What I wish was different

I wish that it would have been a paid internship, because New York can be a pretty expensive city. I was lucky enough to be able to live with my aunt, so I didn't have to pay rent. Therefore, my expenses weren't too bad, but it still would have been nice.

Advice

I believe that anyone who's interested in the publishing industry should consider working at a literary agency, and Folio is a wonderful option! I learned so much.
