Psychologist Research Assistant

May 2017 - August 2018 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I liked the sense of being part of a team and knowing that every task I completed was going to help the lab. My supervisor was very kind and flexible with the Research assistants but I also learned a lot from her. The other RA's and my supervisor became very good friends of mine and given the right timing I would most definitely be a part of that lab again. I learned organizational skills, professional etiquette, and obviously a lot of information about the topics we were researching in psychology.

What I wish was different

Nothing I had a very pleasant experience.

Advice

I encourage anyone in the field of psychology who is considering to continue their higher education into a graduate degree to volunteer/intern for a psychology lab as early as their second year in college. It's a wonderful experience to participate in research studies and possibly collaborating with graduate students to create posters and present them at conferences. It also is a great way to attain some recommendation letters for when you apply to grad school.

Volunteer

June - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I enjoyed expanding my knowledge on behavioral treatments techniques and interacting with patients directly. The staff were very professional and prepared for the daily activities and offered their help whenever I needed it.

What I wish was different

I enjoyed my time volunteering for the program and would have hope it was longer. I wish I could have interacted on more one on one sessions with patients and their families.

Advice

This is a great opportunity for students interested in behavior analysis, but keep in mind the set up of the program is based on a usual classroom set up. Students need to be prepare to act as teachers and care givers to patients and possess strong problem-solving skills

Counselor

June - August 2018 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I loved spending time with the children! It was great fun.

What I wish was different

I wish the camp had implemented more emotional regulation techniques, as I feel like the camp could have done a better job at teaching the children doping mechanisms to react to their emotions (anger, frustration).

Advice

Working with children is probably one of the most rewarding experiences that one can have. If you ever get a chance to work hands-on with children, take it! You will not regret it.

Learning Assistant

May 2017 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I loved reinforcing my knowledge of human anatomy and helping students learn the material as well. I also loved working with other LAs as well as the professor.

What I wish was different

Initially I had wished that the class lectures would take place in a bigger classroom but that was eventually met, right now there is not anything I would like to change besides maybe updated models for the lab.

Advice

Stay on top of the anatomy material so you can help students in the best way possible. Ask other LAs for help whenever needed and always make sure to follow everything the professor says to do and even go beyond to show how passionate you are about the subject.

What I liked

The part that I liked the most about this job was being able to meet and interact with so many people that have different backgrounds not just by their nationality but the way they grew up and the things that they have done to get to where they are at now.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would be able to do this for more than just a year because this is an opportunity like none other, so I had to maximize the time I have in this position at the university.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share with someone who wants to embark on this journey would be to definitely keep an open mind and have patience because you have to deal with a lot of people at a time, and sometimes things get tough, but you have to keep in mind the reason you applied to do this in the first place.
