Electrical Engineering Co-op

January - December 2023 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

The culture and work environment here is great. Everyone is willing to help you out and will answer any questions you may have. There is no belief that you can have too many questions as a co-op. They will also do everything they can to help you grow during your co-op time here. They are willing to line up your best interests with theirs. I got to do lots of different tasks that improved my knowledge in the electrical side of the material handling industry. Those included getting experience in learning electrical drawings, technical writing, programming, and even hands on electrical tasks. Lastly, there are opportunities to travel to customer sites if that interests you as well.

What I wish was different

It's been a fantastic experience, and I can't think of any differences.

Advice

They are big believers in mistakes can be your best learning opportunities, so don't be afraid to make a mistake. Another piece of advice is to have the mindset of soaking everything in. As a sophomore in college and it being my first co-op experience, I had to learn tons of new stuff, so try your best to just keep learning and improving your skills. It'll pay off farther down the line.

Product Portfolio Management Co-op

June 2023 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

I really love the work environment here. Everyone is very welcoming and its very easy to just pop over to someone's desk for a question or just to chat. Secondly, Fives takes really good care of interns in every way with housing, co-op bonding, and really accepting us as part of the employee family. As part of my management co-op I got to sit in on a lot of different meetings so I got a really great look at the way things are done here and what all the engineers are doing. You aren't separated as interns like put on an intern only project separate from what the other engineers are doing. You are working right with everyone else of different ranks all working together on the same project.

What I wish was different

I don't think there really is anything the company could do differently. This has been an amazing experience!

Advice

Really take all of the opportunities available. Go to the events and professional developments. Ask lots of questions and try to learn as much as possible.
