Patients get mad if you tell them that they have a balance (usually the lower the balance, the madder they get. Someone who owes a hundred dollars is, oddly enough, way nicer than someone who owes two dollars) they need to pay, be very diplomatic about it and be ready to go get the biller to explain what had happened exactly to give them a balance.
