I liked that it was relevant experience in the banking industry. It wasn't a teller position at a bank. Not much is gained from that. This internship allowed you to do the same job that experiences examiners have been doing for 20 years. You learn so much about the laws and regulations that banks have to follow and it was cool to enforce them.
What I wish was different
I wish there would have been goals to meet throughout the summer.
Advice
I would advise anyone who is interested in banking to try and work for the FDIC first. This will help you so much to understand why banks do things the way that they do and will give you a leg up on anyone else.

May - August 2019 • Princeton, IL
What I liked
The amount of real work I did was awesome. I truly felt like my work mattered. I traveled to 5 different banks over the summer to examine them and they flew us interns out to Washington, DC for two weeks as well.
What I wish was different
Nothing. This internship was overall really amazing.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask as many questions as you possibly can so you can get the most out of the internship experience.

Division of Consumer Protection - Student Trainee
June - September 2018 • Baton Rouge, LA
What I liked
What I enjoyed most was being a part of the Division of Consumer Protection. The FDIC has multiple branches within the corporation, but I took pride in examining banks to verify consumers were not being taken advantage of.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had a chance to also intern with the division of Risk Management and Soundness. Unlike consumer protection, RMS is more focused on the financial health of an institution.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share is to network and be involved with the CSUSB a community. I obtained my internship because I use most of the resources offered to me, especially those that the career center has to offer. Throughout my entire internship, I was grateful to the staff that helped me get to where I was this past summer.

June - August 2023 • Dallas, TX
What I liked
Helpful and kind supervisors and coworkers, work can be pretty interesting, very good compensation for travel
What I wish was different
Lot of bureaucracy and hoops to jump through when it comes to the head administration's requirements. For interns, not enough work to actually last you the full day or week, so you will often have downtime
Advice
Work hard on getting eligibility requirements done as soon as possible. Administration does not mess around with those.

What I liked
There was a lot of opportunity to travel (including training in Washington DC), it paid well, and many of the employees were helpful and pleasant to work with.
What I wish was different
Some weeks between exams are very slow and there is not always a lot of meaningful work that the interns can do. I wish that those times had been spent doing things that were not busy work.
Advice
This internship will give you a lot of exposure to banks, banking regulations, as well as what it is like to work for the government.

What I liked
I have enjoyed my time at the FDIC in RMS. The trainings and experience gained through the apprenticeship model has been a highlight. The work is challenging but there are resources and team members that help guide you in the right direction. This internship has limited "intern work" and more exposure to what it is like to be a Financial Institution Specialist. The employees are very team oriented and amiable.
What I wish was different
I wish the internship was longer; eleven weeks flew right by.

Student Trainee
May 2018 • Arlington County, VA
What I liked
The corporation is very diversed and people are very nice here.
I am an INTP immigrant type and would normally have curiosity that sometimes could be difficult for people to understand my point, but I receive a very open-minded from people at FDIC.
What I wish was different
I thought about NVCC Academic Success Center, while I was training. I used to be a tutor at ASC, where I discovered the reason why people don’t always understand the same thing they heard. I wish FDIC explore to students(and people) lerning styles and apply them here. I will do and hopefully, they would impliment it.
Advice
I would encourage all students, especially those who are not native English speakers. Getting an internship, has a lot of benefits to your long term career. FDIC is self-funded organization created by Congress. We are very powerful in term of stablize the economy. You will be exposed to your areas of interest, learn about them and you’ll learn about yourself as well. In order to get better at something, the most effective way is using it. So, my knowledge and experiences from my oversea and private companies exposed to something different, more time to reduce my resundency. My English improve very fast with just be in the environment. Finally, you know what you get, but don’t forget to give it back! Work really hard even if your work is not perfect, but when you go home “just only you know” that you already did your best, be happy about it quietly.

What I liked
The job paid great and I was treated as if I was a commissioned employee. Everyone was very nice and helpful. I had plenty of time to complete assignments.
What I wish was different
The job was not easy due to my lack of knowledge in banking. The other examiners are quick to help when you do not understand, though.
Advice
Before applying, do many google searches about how to ace an interview with the FDIC. It is based on a formula, not how much they like you.

Program Assistant
June - August 2018 • Arlington County, VA
What I liked
Absolutely everything. It proved my gut instinct that I am. at-heart. a public servant. I specifically worked in the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI) in which I was treated respectfully and I still keep in touch with many of my former coworkers. The work itself was business-related in terms of data and trend analysis in regard to diversity and inclusion efforts. Additionally, I was prompted to think outside-the-box. In this sense, I had room to be creative.
What I wish was different
That I could've stayed longer.
Advice
To say 'yes' although may not know the terrain. You're encouraged to ask questions as an intern - learn every moment.

Economic Analysis and Research Intern
May 2017 • Atlanta, GA
What I liked
This internship provided me with the foundation to analytical skills using Microsoft Excel. The team I had the opportunity to work with was completely supportive and helpful throughout the entire internship and made it a priority to make sure that I was understanding specific trends.
What I wish was different
The only thing that I wish would have been different was a consistent flow of tasks and projects. Sometimes I found myself with nothing to work on. However during times like this, I went to my supervisor's office to sit in on analysis she was conducting.

Financial Instittuon Intern
May - August 2023 • Scott Depot, WV
What I liked
I loved the travel. I had multiple road trips to Raleigh, NC and Atlanta, GA. Excellent compensation too.
My supervisor gave me assignments right away. I spent my first two days completing the orientation, and on the third day, I was traveling to a bank to meet with the Board of Directors.
What I wish was different
Most of the trainings were virtual. I was hoping that they would have been in person.
Advice
Take a sales class or read How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. These will help you with bank management.
Ensure your car is ready for heavy travel. I drove over 4,000 miles in three months.
Start a budget and keep track of the per diem that you receive. You are reimbursed for expenses that you use on your personal credit card. However, these expenses can easily become overwhelming. Especially when you are spending $600 a week on hotels.

Risk Management Intern
May - August 2020 • Nashville, TN
What I liked
I loved working alongside bank examiners of all experience levels. You gain hands on experience in the world of bank management and learn skills transferrable beyond banking. The FDIC ensures you stay updated on economic and financial sector news and constantly provides training and professional development opportunities.
What I wish was different
My experience was completely virtual due to current circumstances. I wish I had opportunity to participate in on-site examinations.
Advice
There is a steep learning curve in the beginning of the internship. Many regulatory and banking concepts are new and confusing to interns, but coworkers are very helpful as you get acclimated to the environment. Don't be afraid to admit when you don't understand something, and stay in touch with the nationwide intern class.
