It was a welcoming environment where I learned a lot about the corporate world.
What I wish was different
Nothing actually, it was a very well-run internship program where I was treated with respect and I felt I made a difference.
Advice
Even if you're not planning on going into the insurance world don't write off internships at these companies, they are valuable learning experiences.

Competitive Intelligence Intern
May - August 2019 • West Des Moines, IA
What I liked
I loved the internship program as a whole. It was very organized, planned out and had quality presentations, workshops and various other events that made the internship very pleasing. I also enjoyed the people I worked with. Most people are very laid back, humorous and want to have a good time at work just as much as they're there to work.
What I wish was different
I enjoyed the projects I worked on, however, I was craving more excitement. The projects became very repetitive and I found myself wanting more of a challenge. Obviously this was an internship and was very grateful for the job so I can't complain too much.
Advice
Speak with your managers and do not be afraid to ask questions. I found myself confused lots of the time, but I took it upon myself to ask fellow interns and coworkers anything I was lacking direction in.

IT Data and Analytics Solutions Team Intern
June - August 2019 • West Des Moines, IA
What I liked
I got to work on a variety of projects. Farm Bureau also hosted a lot of intern events.
What I wish was different
The start time was 8 AM which was a little early however, you got to leave before 5.
Advice
Set up meetings with people across the organization. I learned a lot about how each job functions in an organization such as how actuaries make their tables to what VPs do during meetings.

Housing & Auto Claims Intern
May - August 2019 • West Des Moines, IA
What I liked
They had a wonderful intern program where you could job shadow anyone in the company and attend different networking events with other interns.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have been given more responsibility in my role. I feel like a lot of the tasks were mundane, and I think I could have made more of an impact given the opportunity.
Advice
Make friends with everyone you meet and make an effort to reach out to the higher ups. Everyone was so friendly and nice at my internship, and that was truly what got me through the days at times. Along with that, I learned so much from meeting with people outside of my department to get a better idea of the company and the jobs it holds.
