Fareway Stores, Inc.

Retail Intern

May - August 2021 • Sioux City, IA

What I liked

I liked that it was offered at the store I was already employed at, which allowed me to gain experience while also being in my hometown

What I wish was different

Advice

Although my ending career goal is not in retail, I feel that gaining this kind of experience helped open sorts of possibilities and make my resume stronger.

Part Time Full Timer (Market Clerk)

June 2018 • Geneseo, IL

What I liked

I love that this job had so many things to do and that the environment is fast. I constantly was busy with things to do and hardly ever get bored.

What I wish was different

I wish my boss would care about his employees more than the customers, as our field is difficult to deal with. People always have something to complain about, I've had multiple scenarios with other coworkers and customers that could be considered violations of privacy and gender equality. The manager always depends on the "better" workers to do everything and constantly berrates them to do better but the others who don't care get away with their high pay and laid back attitudes.

Advice

Stand up for yourself. NO MATTER WHO TO. If the boss doesn't seem like he/she/they will care, go to the next tier in the business. Especially if it's something serious (such as pro quid pro or harassment). Your comfort and feelings are valid and more important than what actually is followed as guidelines in your department.

Retail Sales Intern

June - August 2019 • Boone, IA

What I liked

I met so many amazing people and I had the opportunity to meet many of the corporate employees. This was a great way for me to get my name out into the company and make connections to help me in my future. While working in the store I also had the opportunity to learn so much more about the company and how a day-to-day goes for a manager.

What I wish was different

Nothing at all. Every day was a learning experience and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Advice

Put yourself out there. Meet as many supervisors, regional presidents, and buyers as you can. They are there to help you grow within the company and have the best experience as possible over the course of your internship.

Grocery Clerk

January 2016 • Council Bluffs, IA

What I liked

I really enjoyed how fun the work environment was. My boss was always trying to make us happy because a happy employee makes a happy customer. The people working there also made Fareway a second home to me. It is a small store so I liked that aspect.

What I wish was different

I wish that two or three people who work there didn't. I think the store would do a lot better without them. Other than that I liked how the process of the interview and working went.

Advice

Don't be afraid to go in and ask if they're hiring! Look nice and ask to meet the boss, it will reflect better than a piece of paper saying that you want to work there.
