Software Engineer Intern

April - September 2020 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I loved the team. They made the whole remote work thing fun and interesting. Plus they were all great people. I learned a lot from them because they trusted me to do the work.

What I wish was different

My whole experience was done remotely due to the pandemic. I wish I could have seen my team in person more often, but it wasn’t that bad anyway.

Advice

It is definitely worth all of that extra work to apply and get the job you want.

Technical Assistant

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

When giving user support, remember to step back and look at the big picture every so often, and also be tactful and consistent in your communication. In our instant gratification culture, sometimes end users want issues to be handled immediately and exactly the way they want, and that's just not always feasible or wise. So just do your best, use good judgement, and let users lift up your work rather than pull you down.

Operations Execution Manager Intern

May - September 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

FamilySearch is a great environment where you are encouraged to both learn new skills and apply what you have learned in school to your work. I was able to learn so much and felt motivated the entire time thanks to a great mentor, team, and supervisor who all incorporated my skills into the work. I was more than happy when they extended an offer for a full-time position that I accepted.

What I wish was different

I wish I had communicated with the career services at UVU to see about getting credit because everyday I was in an environment where I could use what I've learned and continue pursuing skills that I hope to obtain in my studies. This internship felt like a great learning experience for my education and career goals.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice to anyone is to be confident in your ability and skills. I always downplayed what I could do and what contributions I made to the team. When I was offered a chance to interview for a full-time position, my interview did not go well. My supervisor came to me surprised that her feedback said I did not seem confident or very motivated about the position; this was the opposite of how I felt. I had another interview where the team showed me how they viewed my abilities and it helped me see that I was doubting myself too much.

Software Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I really liked the workplace environment. I also loved how each employee was passionate about their work. My manager, Brian Jensen, was also amazing and personable. Brian obviously cared about both me and the work he did.

What I wish was different

I have no complaints.

Advice

Reach out to every single contact you have. If none of those contacts work out, turn your resume over to each and every person. This internship came from determination to get an internship. They very obviously cared about hard work and determination which got me the job.

Record Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

The work environment was great, very cooperative and uplifting. Managers were great at checking in and very open to questions and suggestions.

What I wish was different

My specific job was pretty tedious and focused on organization. From the outset it was made pretty clear that it would be this way but that is was necessary. If I had been given multiple projects to work on it may have been more manageable.

Web Developer Intern

April - October 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I was treated like any other employee. I was given real tasks that were included in production.

What I wish was different

Advice

Breathe. There will seem to be mountains of information and things that you do not know. It’s okay. Your manager knows it and your team knows it because they also have been where you are. Remember to breathe and take it all in and do the best that you can.

What I liked

The fun I had with my 3 little granddaughters and the help I provided to their parents.

What I wish was different

That we had money to go places and also that I was feeling more physical fit to cope with them. It was hard since I had just gone through a back surgery and a mastectomy .

Software Dev Engineer

May 2018 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I work directly with my boss and am not on a team (which is more rare for software development). I loved the flexibility. This summer I was living in Germany and my boss allowed me to work remote for 10 hours a week so that I could live there and travel and also take a UVU class online as well. The projects are also important and didn't feel like it was just for an intern (even though this job is a continuation of my internship last summer).

What I wish was different

I wish I had put more effort into having a designated work space in my apartment in Germany, because it was hard to have it be wherever I could find time and the space.

Advice

The most important part of the job quality is your boss in my opinion. Having a good understanding boss who is willing to work with you on schedule and trusts you with projects is the best kind of boss.

Web Development Intern

April - August 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

FamilySearch has an awesome work environment. I liked my team members, and learned a lot. I felt like I was able to make a significant—and needed—contribution.

What I wish was different

I was expecting perhaps a little more mentorship, and during my time there was a fairly large frontend technology transition that understandably brought some inconveniences.

Advice

Steve Rockwood, the CEO, encouraged us to bloom where we were planted. Most of my work was on an internal tool—probably not what I was expecting—but it was still really fulfilling.

Software Developer Intern

April - August 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

Great experience. I felt treated like an engineer, not just an intern. It gave me a good feel for what work as an engineer at FamilySearch was like. Coworkers were wonderful and friendly.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave you more knowledge going in about what your actual work will be like.

Advice

Work hard, be self-directed, and be thinking of good ways to synthesize your experience for future reference.

Software Developer Intern

April - September 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I loved the workplace and environment. I felt like I had something to contribute and I was given tasks that were challenging, but achievable. Working with a real team really boosted my confidence and helped me recognize that it's okay to not know everything--what is important is that I'm willing to ask and learn.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've been more patient with myself at the beginning. I was frustrated that I didn't know everything all at once, but, in reality, there was so much to learn of course it took time to learn it!

Advice

It's okay to not know everything at first! Getting into a workplace is like jumping into a new world. There are things that everyone knows, but you do not. And it's okay! Be patient and ask questions and you will get there.

Software Quality Assurance Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

Wonderful people, go at your own pace, given opportunity to contribute.

What I wish was different

Not too much, the onboarding process had a little busy work but that was it

Advice

Control your own destiny. Work hard and be open with your manager about what you'd like to work on, they're very flexible

Software Quality Assurance Engineer Intern

May 2018 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I love the working environment at FamilySearch! Everyone I work with has been really nice and willing to help me learn the ropes. I'm part of an excellent team and I've been able to do work that actually contributes to something great. They've also been really great about working with my schedule and overall, I think they have a really great work/life balance.

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing! I only wish I could've started working here sooner.

Advice

I'd advice future interns here to take their work seriously and take advantage of this wonderful learning opportunity. They love to hire interns on full or even part time (while they're still in school), so I'd make sure to let your manager know as soon as possible if that's something you're interested in.

What I liked

The atmosphere at FamilySearch is wonderful! They work with you to help you know what needs to be done and they show you the format they have used in the past, but they don't limit you to the past. They are always innovating ways to improve their processes.
