Intern

April - June 2020 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I loved the learning experiences I had at the center and getting to know the staff and why they are passionate about the jobs they are currently in.

What I wish was different

I wished I had more opportunity to stay close with the social workers and work closely with them but because of COVID19 restrictions that were not possible.

Advice

Be willing to do more than just the basics. Volunteer your time and be willing to contribute more to the center's mission.

Family Crisis Center Intern

January - March 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I loved getting a first hand experience working with people who had been domestically or sexually abused. It was a neat experience to hear real stories and see what resources are available to help people who have been in those situations. it was great to see how a non-profit organization focused on helping others in their community works and to see how much the community helped and wanted to be involved. I walked away with a much higher respect for the people in the Rexburg community and their desire to serve. I also liked that there was heavy issues, but not a lot of different situations piled on you at once. Therefore, it was a good way to get your feet wet and experience what a job in this capacity would be like, but also not feel extremely overwhelmed physically or emotionally. And honestly, the support system at the Family Crisis Center when heavy issues were brought to the center was amazing. It was great to have so many caring advocates help you learn how to debrief and let go of the heavy things so that you could truly help people who came through the door.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have done it longer. This is really based on my major and the hours needed for the internship. Though it was nice to have the relieve in my schedule, I really missed going in everyday. I would maybe suggest taking less credits, I took 18 credits and did the internship, whereas if I took less credits I might have felt that I could stay on and finish the semester even after my hours were up. Also, the one critique I have is that you have to be really motivated to learn, because there isn't a lot of training. It is more if a situation arises and you stand up and say you want to be involved you can be and then you will learn through experience. I wish I could have had the same training as the after hour advocates. However, I did read the training material given to them and was able to ask as many questions as I wanted.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice is to find a way to make it so you can be at the center every day. I was only available with my schedule to come in two days a week. I did get some great experiences because I was working long hours those two days, so I could get my internship hours in. However, there are certain experiences like going to court with the advocates that I would have loved but they were always scheduled on days where I was in school all day. So, I would take a light load if you can and spread out your availability throughout the week, so you can experience everything the crisis center does.

Public Health Intern

September - December 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I liked the people working there and experience working as a receptionist. I was also able to learn how a non profit runs. It was a very neat experience. I was also able to sit in with our advocates as they talked with clients and was able to see everything that was going on.

What I wish was different

I don’t wish anything had been different.

Advice

I would say to make friends with all of the advocates and workers there because they teach you so much about their work.
