Falley Scout Reservation- Summer Camps

Handicraft Instructor

June - July 2018 • Oskaloosa, KS

What I liked

This was a rewarding of a job it was and it was a great way to spend my summer. My day-to-day duties included teaching merit badges (pottery, basketry, first aid) and leading games for scouts ages 6-18. On evenings off I enjoyed hanging out with the other staff, hiking trails, fishing, and paddle boarding.

What I wish was different

The leadership team, which was mostly comprised of college students, was a bit disorganized when I worked there in high school. There were a few times where I was in a situation where I had to improvise some games or skits for the campers. A college student working there would likely be in a leadership position such as a program area director.

Advice

Because this camp is a non-profit, you are not payed hourly, but by the season based on how much you ask for, the position you hold, and through conversation. I recommend requesting pay on the higher end of the spectrum because if they are having some trouble filling their staff they may take you up on it.

It's a great job if you enjoy camping and the outdoors. I was able to teach boating activities and earned a lifeguard certification.

Climbing Director

May 2014 - August 2020 • Oskaloosa, KS

What I liked

I loved the community! The staff, scout leaders, and scouts are all pretty focused on having a safe and fun time! And getting paid to spend all day on a climbing tower in the woods 10/10.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten more in-person training. Prep being remote in 2020 was pretty rough.

Advice

Give things a fair shake, some rules don't make sense at first but wait and ask questions and they tend to be key for scout safety.
