EY LLP

Assurance Intern

January - March 2020 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

I consider my time as an intern as a wonderful learning experience. I had the opportunity to work in four different teams and industries that were different from one another. I liked everything about the firm, but what I think was more important to me is that in every team that I was on the professionals were always willing to help me and provide guidance, despite being extremely busy with their own work. Working as a team and lifting one another is a fundamental part of the firm’s culture.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share with future interns is to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the great people that work for the firm. If you do not understand something there is always someone else who is willing to help you. Being a team player is extremely important and valued!

Accounting Intern

June - August 2019 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

During my Launch Internship with EY I had the opportunity to work with many different service lines to see which one I preferred. Throughout the internship I spent time with the Risk Advisory, Audit and Tax teams. My time with the company was amazing, everyone was welcoming and helpful and this experience has confirmed my interest in Audit. I even still met with some of the employees on Thursday nights for beach volleyball.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was an astonishing experience.

Advice

For any accounting students looking for an internship, EY is a great place to start.

Accounting Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I like the networking and the experience. The people were so willing to teach and alleviated the feeling of not knowing what to do. They explained everything one by one and helped make my experience at the internship very memorable.

What I wish was different

I wish I knew about this sooner so that I would've applied sooner rather than later.

Advice

My advice is that you should apply to the internships. Even if they feel out of reach because you never know what opportunities you could receive. I applied on a whim, not expecting a reply. It really changed my summer and gave me a strong reference for my resume.

Financial Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

EY is an incredible firm and my favorite part of the experience was the people. My team members were very welcoming and willing to help me learn and grow. I particularly enjoyed the clients I was assigned to.

What I wish was different

I did not feel much effort was made to connect the interns with each other. I think there should have been socials from the first week to build relationships and foster a culture of connection among fellow interns. Although these opportunities did exist, they occurred late in the summer and therefore people were less motivated to attend or did not make them a priority. Had I been able to build strong relationships from the get go, I think I would have felt more connected to the firm and enjoyed my experience more.

Advice

Have a good attitude and be willing to learn. Your team will see this and it will be infectious. Even the more menial tasks can be a learning opportunity if you take the time to see the purpose of them in the greater audit.

Transfer Pricing Intern

June - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The culture was great. We had resources we could pull from from different parts of the country, as well as overseas. My team really cared about its people. Hours for Transfer Pricing do vary by week, I never worked long hours.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer. It lasted 8 weeks, one of which was training, another 3 days was the intern conference, and one week of vacation because of 4th of July. I didn't want to leave by the end of it!

Advice

Try to be as polished as possible. Put your best foot forward, while also being yourself. Network as much as possible. Volunteer to speak in intern presents, I wish I had!

Risk Advisory

June - August 2019 • Iselin, NJ

What I liked

I liked that they gave me opportunities to work with a variety of teams. This gave me a chance to see the different type of work that was done. I was able to learn so much and by the end I was able to do a lot of things independently.

What I wish was different

That it was longer, it went by so quickly.

Advice

Ask questions, if you feel lost there is always someone there to help you get back on track. Just make sure you at least tried to figure it out on you own first.

Financial Services Business Advisory Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work with my team at the client site and learn about another industry while developing my consulting skills. My favorite part of the internship was meeting other interns at training and the Disney trip and making friends who I still talk to even after the summer. EY definitely gave me great insight into what my full-time career will be like.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more company-wide initiatives to meet more people within EY. Being on client site all week was beneficial, however it prevented me from meeting as many people within EY as I could.

Advice

One piece of advice I have is to develop as many relationships as possible over the summer. The people you meet early on are the ones who will be more willing to help you along the way. While working in a large company, like EY, it is essential to have connections in order to stand out from the crowd.

Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

The people there are great, and because the internship is an established program I was grouped with ten other interns who were all going through the same things I was. The staff and seniors were helpful, and I felt challenged but not overly pressured. Everyone was very open to questions and ideas, and the schedule was flexible.

What I wish was different

Driving to Irvine from Orange is not a fun commute, especially once their schools started up again, but that's honestly the only imperfection I have.

Advice

Ask questions! All the staff and seniors want to help you, and if you're having trouble with something someone else probably did last year as well.

Risk Advisory Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to work on a variety of projects in two cities (New York and Sydney) as part of the Global Student Experience program. The senior members of my teams were always very willing to answer my questions as I worked through my tasks. I had candid conversations with everyone from Staff 1 to Partner level and felt that EY truly cultivated a positive working environment.

What I wish was different

Advice

Go into the internship with an open mind and willingness to tackle different types of projects. During your free time, network with people outside your team and soak up as much information as possible. Anyone can feel free to reach out to me with any questions about my experience at EY.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Iselin, NJ

What I liked

My audit team truly cared about my experience at the firm, and were constantly checking on me to make sure I understood their explanations and was learning as much as possible.

What I wish was different

I spent most of my time in conference rooms with my audit team, which was amazing because I was able to learn as much as possible, but I do wish I had more time to bond with the fellow interns in my class. We only really got to know each other during the International Intern Leadership Conference in Disney World, and it would've been wonderful to have had more time with them before the end of my internship.

Advice

I would say to go into your internship with confidence. I was quite nervous to start with the firm in the beginning because I had not had any previous accounting work experience, but looking back now, I see that my nerves were for nothing. The interview process had been very rigorous, and after it was over, the HR team had made the clear decision to employ me. You must realize that even when you feel like you know "nothing", there is a reason why you have ended up where you are. Someone saw your potential, and took a chance on you. It is only right that you believe in your capabilities as they believed in you.

Accounting Intern

June - August 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

I liked the overall environment that EY offered. Everyone was extremely friendly and willing to help you learn.

What I wish was different

I wish my internship was longer so I could have gained more experience since it ended before the summer was over.

Advice

I would advice interns to always ask questions if they come across one, it’s better to voice your question to your team rather than try to complete your work and be unsure if you’re completing it properly.

Valuation, Modeling, & Economics Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the lean structure of the teams I was working in. There was great exposure to senior employees (partners, managers). Autonomy was given to me on all of my projects with a culture focused on self-learning for an involved experience- there was no shortage of resources for this, and plenty of training. The work itself was very technical and rewarding, I learned how to build DCF and WACC models and got plenty of time to get familiar with research software (Bloomberg, CapIQ, Thomson ONE)

What I wish was different

The self-learning culture is a dual edged sword. Throughout the entire summer, I was rarely checked in on and had to go to lengths at times to get staffed on an engagement so I wasn't sitting around. There also was a poorly placed case study that was due at the end of the summer, when it should have been the first task given to interns; it was more of a precursor to the work we did over the summer than it was something that would solidify what we did at the end. It seemed like my group was understaffed (full time staff were always in a fire drill) and the pay could be better for the type of work being done.

Advice

Always pursue more work/learning material and try to get your hands on as wide of a variety of projects as possible. This way you can discover your strengths and weaknesses, and tailor which engagements you choose to pursue.
