Client Audit Intern

March - August 2019 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed the amount of experience I gained from this internship. As an intern, I was able to access all of the same resources as a full-time employee. Additionally, I really enjoyed the work environment. Being able to ask any questions I had to any of my teammates or directors was a cool thing to experience.

What I wish was different

During my time at Express Scripts, the department I was working within was going through a slow patch. Therefore, my workload was minimal and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do. I wish I could've immersed myself within the department I was working under a little more through my work but it was something out of my team's hands.

Advice

Take advantage of networking. With my free time, I found myself booking appointment with people outside of my department within areas that just interested me or sounded cool. I talked with so many different people to understand their roles, which led me to become interested in a wide variety of things at Express Scripts. This also expanded my personal network and made me more marketable.

Network Engineer

May - August 2019 • Franklin Lakes, NJ

What I liked

The company culture was fantastic. Express Scripts had a very welcoming environment that encouraged collaboration; everyone wanted to help you. I was also exposed to a variety of new technologies, which I got to have hands-on experience with!

What I wish was different

It felt like you had to jump through a lot of hoops to get one thing done. I understand the need for such strict policies (especially working for a healthcare company), but I feel that sometimes the quality of my work suffered as a result.

Advice

If you're given an opportunity that you feel unqualified for, don't shy away from it! For a lot of the internship, I felt like I had no idea what I was doing -- and that's okay! You're not expected to know everything. Let your passion drive your motivation to learn, and turn those moments of not knowing into opportunities to expand your knowledge.

I was treated as part of the team and given whatever flexibility was necessary in order for me to learn and complete my project.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

There was a lot of freedom to decide what I wanted to work on based on what I was most interested in. In addition the team I worked with was very open and helpful throughout the internship.

What I wish was different

With Express Scripts being such a large company some of their processes -- such as onboarding new interns -- was a little slow.

Advice

Research all of the different roles in the department you are interested in going into and reach out to get a feel for what they do on a day to day basis. You should be interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you to make sure the internship is the best fit for you.

Tax Intern

January 2017 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

The Tax team at Express Scripts is exceptional. Great experience working at a Fortune 22 company. I worked on projects ranging from the Federal Income Tax Return to various projects for the Sales & Use team.

What I wish was different

I was very nervous in a cubicle at first and it took me a while to get comfortable with advocating for myself with regards to asking for work, discussing my compensation and asking for performance feedback.

Advice

Work to build relationships and find out what hobbies people have outside the office. The personal relationships will result in more enjoyable work days, more trust and better projects.
