Excel Engineering

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

I really liked that my supervisors worked to the best of their ability to align my work with my interests. This meant that I got to work on larger scale facilities rather than just on smaller, more manageable projects, go on site visits and have the things I saw explained to me in real time, and sit in on meetings with clients to observe how the process of consulting works. I also really enjoyed that the team I worked on was incredibly helpful. They wanted me to ask questions and learn more beyond the bare minimum skills for the position. It was also a very warm and welcoming work environment. Excel had many different events going on - some of which were intern exclusive - and they were very flexible if I needed time off.

What I wish was different

Honestly no notes! The reason I am personally not returning is because I realized that I wasn't meant to work in engineering consulting. That has nothing to do with the job, but that I wasn't ready for the responsibility you take on by becoming a professional, licensed engineer.

Advice

Each day of working with Excel is wonderful if you're ready to make the most of your time there. Go to company sponsored events, attend the lunch and learns, and learn for the sake of learning. Interviewing with them was a really good experience, make sure you look at their clients and understand what types of projects they consult for.

Architectural Engineering Intern

April 2017 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

The employees are willing to help, regardless of how many times I may have done the same thing.

What I wish was different

I commute from Milwaukee, so driving less would be beneficial.

Advice

As a younger person in this field, don't feel out of place with the older generations.
