Evergy

Design Services Intern

May - August 2022 • Salina, KS

What I liked

A complex internship with different challenges and tasks to consistently take on while working with the company. Coworkers and mentors were nice and welcoming to teach me about the area I was working in and the job that was at hand. Picked up on plenty of hands-on experience and networked throughout the company.

What I wish was different

Software that was required for the job was not given to me during the beginning of the job so I was left to take up menial tasks or work off a coworkers computer until I had access.

Advice

Great workplace to learn about the power industry and get plenty of hands-on experience.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I got to work on real problems and through some of the pole studies I saw direct application of my course work

What I wish was different

With Evergy being spread over a large service territory it made it more difficult to interact with some people that you work with on a daily basis.

Advice

What you don’t know they are more than willing to teach you so ask questions and strike up conversations because in the utility industry people stick around their whole career and that knowledge and experience is priceless so listen and take notes.

What I liked

The internship was challenging, and very rewarding. My team of interns were exposed not only to a variety of technology, but also shown how a real world technology department operates.

What I wish was different

Gym across 1KC called "Lifetime Fitness" was charging a 100$/month summer membership where their regular rates are 45$. It would have been so convenient to work out from where I was going to work.

Advice

See every challenge as an opportunity to learn. Don't be afraid to fail, as that's one way to learn.

Project Controls Intern

May - August 2019 • Topeka, KS

What I liked

At Evergy I was able to experience a very professional workplace, while enjoying multiple events with other interns around the company. I was taught how and what a project control analyst does within a company and it gave me real world experience applicable to what I head learned in the classroom. Throughout the summer, all of the interns within the company were able to go to different sights such Jeffrey energy center and learn what was happening in the field, this was great to see because it got me out of the office and into the field to truly understand what I was working on. One of the greatest parts about my internship was that I wasn’t doing things that my supervisor would not do themselves. I was part of real projects and was even able to lead a project for the company on my own.

What I wish was different

I do not wish I did anything differently, my internship was beyond my expectations!

Advice

Apply for internships you think are out of reach. I did not think I had a chance in receiving the internship over the summer. I was confident and put time and effort into my resume and interview, I was selected out of a high number of applicants.
