ETC - Electronic Theatre Controls

Student Help

July - August 2019 • Middleton, WI

What I liked

Working in an industry where I could have a future career in what I'm going to school for.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've had more set and defined duties, instead of just asking superiors for the next task.

Advice

Talk to professionals in the industry to learn more about the work that they do.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May 2019 • Middleton, WI

What I liked

Experience allowed me to put all the skills I've been learning into practice. I learned a lot about different manufacturing processes and working with different materials.

What I wish was different

I simply wish I had more time there. I worked as an intern over the summer and will be returning over winter break. I also got a coop position for the 2020 fall semester with this company.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Its far better to ask a lot of questions when you are stuck then sit around and not get anything done.

Compliance Student Help

May - August 2019 • Middleton, WI

What I liked

The people are great! They make the learning and working experience great. Everyone has a positive attitude and is willing to help. The collaborative spirit is excellent.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I was the first student to work in this position, so I was somewhat of a test subject. I was able to adjust quickly. It was a good learning experience.

Advice

If you are going to work in compliance. There is a lot of reading to do. A lot. The reading can be a grind, but in the reading one can make discoveries and learn a lot. So don't dread it too much.

Technical Projects Intern

May 2019 • Madison, WI

What I liked

ETC as a company is an incredible place to work. Everyone who works here truly cares about one another, even the temporary employees and interns. The facilities are beautiful, clean, and provide anything an employee could need to complete their job.

What I wish was different

The position that I worked in turned out to have many different responsibilities than I had anticipated, and I have not ended up doing very much actual "engineering" work. In addition to this, I found myself to have a lot of down time. I wish that I would have been provided a bit more structure and given more tasks to do related to my skills, especially given that this was my very first Co-op experience.

Advice

If you feel that you are not getting enough out of a position, stand up for yourself! By speaking to your manager about your concerns, you can work together to help improve the situation for both parties.

Rigging Assembly

May - August 2018 • Mazomanie, WI

What I liked

My coworkers were great, they all helped me to learn a lot and grow as a professional. I also liked that I had a pretty relaxed dress code and could wear casual clothes, as long as they fit safety standards. Also, being able to listen to music/podcasts was great.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to cross train a bit more in other departments, but I worked in 3 different ones over the summer, so I was still able to learn lots.

Advice

The company has a great saying: “Have fun and make money”. Embrace that, because it really is a fun time if you dive into your work. And you make good money.
